Resident country, folk and bluegrass crooner Tyler Childers returned to the scene on Sept. 30 for the first time since 2020. Childers collaborated with his longtime backing band, the Food Stamps. Their album, entitled “Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven,” boasts a tracklist with eight songs–but with a twist. They present each song in three different styles: the “Hallelujah” version, “Jubilee” version and “Joyful Noise” version.

Has everyone listened through this album? it's 8 songs. done 3 different ways. the third being a chopped up wild ride of DJ mixed drum and bass along with andy griffith/minster samples. It's certainly a different approach, and it has some long time fans absolutely PISSED. IMO it's art. He isn't making music for commercial appeal. He isn't making music for anyone but himself it feels like. Is that going to hurt him in the long run? We shall find out I guess.

here's a bit of a review from no depression:

quote:

The Holy Ghost, aka the “Joyful Noise” versions, are an abrupt tonal and musical departure from the first two volumes. Essentially, the songs are presented as sound collages. Instead of vocals, “Old Country Church (Joyful Noise Version)” features a spoken-word soliloquy on the role of the Baptist church in Southern white communities. Elsewhere, snippets of pieces of church services, dialogue from The Andy Griffith Show, and speeches from theologian Thomas Merton are randomly interpolated. For the most part, there are no verses or choruses; occasionally a lyrical passage is used, such as a distorted version of a few lines of the title track, and buried deep in the mix. Drums, organ, and guitar lines are chopped up and looped. From a musical standpoint, nothing really follows any traditional structure, which makes identifying particular selections difficult if you aren’t actively looking at the tracklist. Overall, the approach used is jarring, particularly given the accessibility relative sameness of the “Hallelujah” and “Jubilee” versions. But it also marks a refreshing departure that is sometimes cool, kind of unsettling at other moments, and beguiling throughout.

As a thought experiment and creative exercise, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? is bold and fascinating. Because of that and the choice to balance repetition with an abrasive sonic detour, it’s sure to elicit a polarizing reaction from listeners expecting a more predictable bluegrass-country release. Taken as a whole, it confirms Childers’ burgeoning reputation for thoughtful, provocative work and his willingness to pursue his own muse without catering to audience expectations.

My favorite song from the new release: "heart you've been tending"

I find this to be hysterical, i dig a bunch of the remixes. Its more ambient than clubby imo, but its cool background music. If i went to see him live and he started djing those remixes, id be pissed too. BUT thats not sure whats going on and proves how entitled fans are these days.

Jubilee version of triune god is my favorite, id love to see him play that live with pres hall jazz band.

A real tour would be nice too.

That’s a great interview. He wanted to make something different and abstract. It’s not like he’s playing the last 8 songs “live” so it’s not that big of a deal. Seems like he just wanted to experiment in the studio.

I think a valid gripe though from fans is he has a ton of songs that deserve proper studio recordings and he doesn’t seem to have any desire to record them. I think it’s a shame because nose on the grind stone is a phenomenal song. But that’s up to him.

I listened to parts 1 and 2 at work today. I had to leave before part 3…sounds like I’m in for a wild ride.

So far, I like part 1 the best.

Heart You Been Tending sounds very Pink Floydish to me. Best song on the album.

I don’t understand Childers. He releases a 10 song masterpiece. Then follows it up with a solid 9 song album.

Since then he made a shitty bluegrass record and this weird project. I said it in the other thread but it’s 8 songs: 1 cover, 1 re release, 2 instrumentals (that aren’t really interesting) and 4 new songs with vocals. Those 4 songs are great imo but the album is a huge letdown to Childers fans.

The first version is fine. Sounds great. The second shines in some spots but seems unnecessary in others. The third is hot dogshit.

He has a huge catalogue of songs why can’t he just release an album of them? Why won’t he put messed up kid or jersey giant on an album?

Maybe he just doesn’t have a lot of new, quality original songs in him right now? Creative writing and output isn’t an automatic, linear process. I, like everyone else, would have preferred another offering akin to Purgatory or Country Squire.

But this new record is still a worthy release to me. I find the production/instrumentation and his vocals to be triumphant. And the few new songs are good additions to his repertoire.

it was meant to be abstract/experimental. it's not like he's doing the songs live like that. it seems like it was just something fun to put out that goes along with this concept album of the father son and holy ghost.

I wish he'd record old songs with the band as well.

It’s a very Sturgill trajectory. I get the frustration. I think fans are more forgiving of concept records when there are normal records in between. It’s also cool that we live in a period where artists are able to do fun projects. (It’s complicated)

“I love the fbi” and “gotta get boosted” were my favorites on this album

Call me an outlier, but I freakin love the album.

Hallelujah and Jubilee are both amazing, been listening on repeat since released.

Who cares if the 3rd part sucks? Just don't listen and enjoy the first 2.

Me too, but i actually have been enjoying the joyful sounds version for chill ambient background music. Some songs are WAY more successful than others though imo.
