Got to be more specific on what you're calling "hair metal" because I don't agree that about half the bands mentioned so far qualify according to my definition.

When I think metal, I think of thrashing guitars and screaming vocals. I consider those 5 rock hair bands.

Def Leppard isn't really hair metal, either. But they strongly influenced the genre and kind of got lumped in with them during the 80s.

They didn't wear makeup (although they were heavily influenced by glam, hell Phil was in a glam band called Girl when the boys from Sheffield lured him away), they didn't tease their hair up (although Sav had big hair, it was just sort of naturally that way), and didn't really wear spandex (again, except for Sav, on occasion). If anything they wore ripped jeans and t-shirts during the heyday of hair metal excess like Poison and Winger.

Def Leppard was originally a NWOBHM band (yeah, like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden), but they shifted to the more melodic range, partially because it was natural for Joe and partially because that's where the money and girls were.

The more you know, right?

Speaking of L.A.Guns....just saw them tonight. The Phil Lewis/ Tracii Guns coming back together is still an awesome show. Playing small venues but it was great. Worth still seeing for that era band for sure!

This is a pretty good list, however, I would switch Def Leppard and Motley Crue out for Skid Row and White Snake just for personal preference.
