Saw Taj Mahal at Jazz Fest this year. He barely picked up the guitar. Sad.

In no particular order:

Robert johnson
Muddy waters
Howlin wolf
Willie dixon
Mississippi John hurt
Skip james
Charlie patton
Leadbelly

Hendrix doesnt belong anywhere on a top blues list.

A lot of recency bias in that list. And not sure about some being listed as blues, per se.

In no particular order and easily changed (blues has such a long and varied history, I’d figure we need a list of 50-100 to capture all the names people might come up with as a top 10)

1. Robert Johnson
2. Blind Willie Johnson (master of the slide and sang mostly songs with spiritual implications)
3. Lead Belly. (Huddie Ledbetter)
4. BB King
5. Muddy Waters

Others easily added or switched onto a short list not mentioned in my or the ops list; John Lee Hooker, Memphis Minnie, Sun House, Bobby Bland, Howlin Wolf, Big Bill Broonzy, Ry Cooder, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Albert King and this list could go on and on.

Just found an awesome Robert Johnson CD at Euclid Records. Been on repeat for a few weeks.

Aside: Euclid CD collection has all kinds of awesomeness. Could spend several hours there per week if I didn't have this darn J. O. B.

I had a very hard time leaving him off the list; went with JL Hooker

It’s an impossible task to narrow it down to 5

question about robert johnson.

I was watching a short story on him the other day and I think it said there are only 29 recorded pieces of music by him. I also know that he's almost unanimously considered the best (or at least one of the very best) blues players to ever live. This isn't to be antagonistic but is really out of ignorance, but why is that?

I would ASSUME that's it's simply becuase of the time period and he was doing things people hadn't heard before and was very far advanced for his time and place. And obviously he was good. I guess what I'm asking is, if he was playign music today would he still be considered as legendary without all the urban legend stuff

There is hardly a finer bluesman than Sam Lightnin' Hopkins. Dude was drenched in the blues.

Like others have said, Lightnin is head and shoulders above anyone else IMO.

So much of what we know about Robert Johnson is shrouded in myth, legend, misunderstanding, hype, and the fact that he left so little trail behind him. Likely, we'll never know the true Robert Johnson story.

These lists are hard because what you use to measure the "Top" players. Is it time period or influence? or is it pure skill on an instrument. If the Later is used I have a hard time seeing a list without Albert King and SRV. If importance and influence you pretty much have to include Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and BB. therefor I will choose those 5 guys for my list.

but why is that?

For a couple of reasons; 1st the songs he wrote that are still being covered today....."Crossroad Blues" alone gives him the top spot IMO. Also "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Dust My Broom".

2nd he kinda put blues on map back in the 20s where it spread to Chicago and other places.

Looking for recommendations. I've always liked blues but never really knew much other than the big names.

List me some must have records that I should get on vinyl. Let's say 10 absolute must own records? I want to delve into the genre more and become more well rounded.

Got to You Tube and just listen to a lot of different artists or buy some "greatest hits" albums that have different artists.
