Reckon what the deal was on that?
On a side note I really liked Rosanne's style and selection of music. She's a class act in my book.

If you read some books on them then you start finding things that would make you think.

She didn't like June Carter because Cash couldn't stop talking about her and probably had sensed that an affair was brewing.

June Carter has been known for getting around if know what I mean and Vivian in her book said that June Carter confronted her by saying that Johnny will be mine.

Also tensions were high between Rosanne, her sisters and John Carter. In the movie walk the line which I believe John Carter was involved and the actress that played Vivian was a bitch. When one of the sisters watched the portrayal, she was upset to the point that she walked out of the movie.

It also didn't help that June Carter and Cash gave John Carter most of the inheritance money.

My question is why would Cash drop a solid 10 like Vivian for an ugly three like June Carter?

He must really have been pilled up.

I mean, he didn't have a particularly great range, but his voice was expressive and unique. Country music, in particular, doesn't always require a strong singing voice because, I agree with Ray Charles here, it is all about the stories.

Is Willie a "great" singer? Saying he is a bad singer is probably too strong, but with most of these country singers, especially the men, it is about the style, the image, but most importantly the stories. The country gals do tend to be stronger singers, IMHO.

Johnny was not what you would call, in a technical sense, a great singer. But delivery also plays a big part. He was a larger than life figure, a commanding presence.

Others that aren't 'great' singers, but were successful include:

Jimmy Buffett (although I didn't consider him 'bad')
Willie Nelson
Kris Kristofferson

Poor choice of words.

"Flexibility" probably better than range.

On the other hand, "Beware the man who only owns 1 gun. He probably knows how to use it."

I'm a fan and I don't consider him a strong singer in the same way Elvis Presley or Bill Medley are considered strong singers. This is freely admitting that compared to "proper" singers, Elvis is probably overrated. I mean, The Jordanaires could probably outsing all these top acts, if we're being honest about it

Cash had decent range at F#1-G5. His strengths are his low notes and his higher notes are weak due to his lack of vocal training. If he did then he would be a better singer.

Bill medley who is a bass-baritone just like Cash is the superior to not only Cash but Elvis who didn't have formal vocal training.

Why? He had vocal training that he believed he needed to further advance his career. He said that he would spend an hour warming up his voice before shows.

He probably was a good singer before vocal training but became a great singer making his voice stronger due to vocal training. Something that Cash and Elvis lacked.

Johnny Cash
Jimmy Buffett
Willie Nelson
Kris kristofferson

These are ranked based on vocal raw ability.

I think he was a good singer with a bad arse attitude to go with it. At the time, he was an original with his style. i was lucky to get his autograph a few months before he passed away. My wife was working at a Nashville Hospital where was a patient (under a different name of course).

i was stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky at the time and called me asking if i heard of Johnny Cash. Needless to say, my answer was very sarcastic, because i assumed everyone had heard of who Johnny cash was. She didnt know who he was. Before i shipped overseas (OIF) he was gracious to write a note to me, signing it. Lucky for the wife, she was his nurse and got to meet him and June Carter.

I have a question for the board. Is Johnny Cash a good singer? I mean do you believe his vocals is what got him famous, or was it his songwriting and storytelling? Or was it just only his image?

WHY? Do you need someone to approve what you like to listen to?

Why did Prince Charles prefer Camilla over Diana? Who can explain love?

One thing though, Johnny and June were both in the music business and loved being in the spotlight, and Vivian despised the music business and hated the spotlight. So Johnny and June had that connection that he could never have with Vivian.

Also, he was not faithful to June either. Before he and June got married, when he was still married to Vivian, he was screwing Lorrie Collins of The Collins Kids, plus well into their marriage June caught him screwing her sister Anita and that really threatened the marriage but she stayed with him.

Vivian didn't hate the the music business but had to endure Cash and his affair with June Carter, his dependence on drugs.

I always think of guys like Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark, and John Prine as singers who have a voice that fits their songs and style. They don't have the best voice, but maybe a really great singing voice wouldn't portray the mood or imagery that their voices help their song lyrics invoke.

Very good points.
My voice is OK for some things that I write, but when I write something sort of humorous, or tongue in cheek ( most of it), I need to find another singer who can pull it off.

Cash had by far the most potential in his voice than the rest in the group.

You don't hear very many low baritones/high basses that are in contemporary mainstream music today, Josh Turner comes to mind and he was the biggest country music star for a short time.

Cash didn't take voice lessons that could have strengthen his voice and bring out his full potential.

Bill Medley who has a similar voice type to Cash did admit to taking voice lessons and his voice is elite.

Absolutely. Their voices fit their songs, because the songs came from them. Townes is also in that category. Terry Allen would be one more.

What separates Cash is his songwriting ability and melody creations, and his unique voice adds to that. John Prine falls into this category as well.

Don't forget Willie. And of course at the too-far ridiculous extreme like some pneumonic, bedraggled alleycat lies Bob.
