I have all the respect in the world for Jerry. He was the engine that drove the machine. But I’m a huge Bobby fan. My favorite musical space is the jam at the end of Estimated. And I love to hear him scream. (He’s also got a really hot daughter in case you haven’t seen her.)

I can't really disagree with anything here, can't go wrong with either.

I'm pretty sure seventeen and eighteen minute long versions of Irving Berlin and Rogers and Hart songs would qualify as a big jam vehicle.

I’m pretty sure the Dark Star > Drums > The Other One > Sing Me Back Home from 5/7/72 laughs in your face. Not saying Jerry didn’t jam in his side projects. You should check out his live recording with Howard Wales. (Much better than the “Hooteroll?” album.) But it’s not the same as with the Dead. Can you not tell the difference?

I love JGB and chased them around just as much as the Dead. He was like a best kept secret, touring in between Dead tours 2 or 3 times a year, playing the coolest little places. There is a solid argument that 1993 JGB Garcia was playing better than Garcia with the Dead.

All that being said, JGB and Grateful Dead are not even in the same league...not even close. I love John Kahn but Phill>>>>>>>>>>>>Kahn. Drummers? Same sans maybe Ron Tutt. No rhythm guitar, love Bob. You could lobby for Melvin pretty solidly but he’s not better than Brent. But in the end, it’s the interplay between the Grateful Dead members that destroys any notion they are equals. Not Even Close.

Bobby’s show last nite in vail was amazing.
It’s very cool how he has re arranged some of these songs especially the guitar parts. Gives a new appreciation for his playing when you hear it in his solo bands

if it’s online yet check out the jack straw thru morning dew in the 2nd set

Wolf brothers with the wolf pack>>>>>dead and co

Id much rather hear bobby’s slow versions of the songs reinterpreted with wolf bros than the slow pretend to be the grateful dead stuff in dead and co.

That's the show I tried to get tickets to to no avail. However, that failure led to tickets to Dead & Co in The Woodlands so the future is bright!!

As a newbie I am hesitant to comment on JGB vs Jerry in the Dead. I'm partial to the Dead because that where my late life long strange trip of the Dead began.

I do know as a guitar player that I will stick to my original post (despite all the downvotes) Jerry G is other worldly as a "guitarist/maker of music"

Also...a poster earlier said that that a version of a song was his favorite "terrapin". Is terrapin symbolic of an era of their music or symbolic of the cosmic journey their music takes you on?

Is their even an answer to this question??

The best two keyboardists Garcia ever played with on a semi-regular basis were Merl Saunders and Melvin Seals. I like the Brent era but a lot of his keyboards had that 80s super high and dinky tone to them that made them sound like they were made by Fisher-Price.

Saunders was great but I would hardly call it semi-regular. I agree about Brent but I still feel he is better technically.

Back in 91 I was on JGB tour. In Albany Jerry had serious problems with Tiger during the set II opener Lay Down Sally. The band literally played the same thing over and over...they had no idea what to do...until Jerry came back out with Wolf. If that were the Dead you would never know there was a problem just by listening.

If it was the Dead Weir would have bantered about getting everything just exactly perfect to the crowd for five minutes and then played the take a step back game to kill some more time.

Bobby’s expanded wolf brothers lineup is fantastic.
The horns, strings, keys and steel really open up some space to do very cool stuff, and Bobby is in complete control of the arrangements while allowing the players to riff and improvise

Sat nite in vail they did the entire terrapin suite start to finish, complete with drum break and orchestration. I wish they’d end the dead/bro thing after this year...I’d be content to just go see bob and this band

I wouldn't go out of my way to see Wolf Bros or D&C, but this I would make an effort to see.
