Just watched the documentary on Showtime. Good not great. Great story about a meteoric rise to fame and the difficulties that it can cause between close friends and band mates. Always loved their music and believe they are way under appreciated.

If you get a chance, Kathy Valentine's book goes into so much more detail about their story... quick rise and abrupt break up.. and obviously, more in depth on her personal story and overcoming addiction...

It came out earlier this year and is a great read..

the first all girl rock group that wrote and played original material to have a number one album in the US. I saw them on the police tour and they blew the police away, just a great happy show.

I think Jane is a dominatrix in her spare time BTW

Can y'all point me in the direction in any of their stuff that wasn't their one or two big hits that I'm aware of?

I'm a musician, music junkie, etc. I just never got this group. Honestly, my impression is they just get more credit than they're due because they're all chicks. I was born in 83 so they weren't exactly on my radar growing up, and I haven't dug into them since.

I've never given them their due and I'm certainly willing to. I just always chalked them up to a meh band that got overhype because of being all chicks. I would be happy to see the light, I just don't really know what rabbit hole to go down with them.

Kathy Valentine's book

I may read that one. She was on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. She has lived a hell of an interesting life.

Its really good.. she had a very different upbringing.. and a different point of view of the whole band's break up, not being one of the stars of the group..

She was kind of an after thought to me, as the "other" go go, when I was growing up... But she is incredibly talented and contributed writing many of their better tunes..

they only made three albums...that’s pretty much their discography.
beauty and the beat is up there as far as best good time party albums ever made. The other two decline in order but still have merit

all you are going to find there is tight well played fun music, no need to look any deeper

There were 3 albums made in the 80s that do indeed decline in order. Beauty and the Beat is a cornerstone of American New Wave of the 80s. By Talk Show, it was clear they were falling apart.

There is a 4th album released in 2001 called God Bless The Go-Gos.

Except they didn't sign the Replacements.

I think 'Left of the Dial' shows Westerberg's pain at being eclipsed by an at best equal band ( at that time ).

I pain for Bob, great guitarist. His life, his genius. Absolutely electric and spot on leads.

Yeah I kinda skimmed through them this afternoon on Spotify after reading your post.

So, my impression of them was more or less accurate.

Some catchy stuff, and I like plenty of new wave, but the way people talk about them with reverence, honestly, I always got the impression that there was something more to them and I never bothered to find out what.

To each his own. They're not really my thing. Kinda just straightforward stuff. Their pop hits are enough to satisfy my interest. Was hoping to find some hidden gems!

Live concert from 84

ETA: You might want to check out some of Belinda's solo stuff as well.
