One of the very best bands from that time period in rock 'n roll. Ahead of their time in many respects and totally unique.
Even if someone doesn't care for them, anyone who's ever given them a serious listen would never call them simplistic.

Similar to Nirvana IMO. Not to start a versus argument. Just similar in career trajectory and a frontman that I cannot imagine living past 30.
Great musicians but Morrison was such a personal train wreck. He was spent.
I love The Doors. They put out a lot of music but just too short of a career.

Their live stuff far outshines the radio/studio material. They were tremendous concert performers. Get the "Absolutely Live" album if you haven't already heard it.

I'm 27 and they've consistently been one of my favorite bands of all time.
(I state my age because it doesn't seem a ton of my peers know anything about them outside of Light My Fire and Break on Through)

"alive she cried" is the live album you'd want ... they did a warmup cover before a concert of "gloria" ...
krieger is underrated as a guitarist, imo ... i don't think they're over-rated or under appreciated ... they're probably in the top 40 rock artists of all time ... their middle albums aren't as rock or blues oriented as their first two or last two, but there's still some decent stuff there ...

Comparing The Doors music to The Beach Boys and Stones from the same basic timeframe. The Doors music hasn't aged as well as the others could be the electric piano but prefer the others.

Brilliant band. One of my fave. It's amazing, they made 6 albums approaching 50 years ago and they make an impact on music.

This is a fair assessment.
All the "cool kids" don't like The Doors anymore because of the movie and the fact that 99% of incoming female freshmen wanna-be hippies at LSU have a Doors poster and think they're cool because of it. If you can separate the music from that bullshite, The Doors really were a good band and made some awesome music. I do agree that Morrison was a pretentious dude, but so were a shite ton of artists then and today.

I think they're a tad overrated. I think Kreiger was an underrated guitarist, and Manzarek(sp?) was good on keys, but Morrison's antics always overshadowed their playing. I find most of their stuff boring now, but they were the first classic rock band I fell in love with in high school.

One of the greatest bands of all time IMO. Could you imagine being the other band members and trying to put up with Jim's antics on stage? I watched a deal about their last show together in New Orleans at the Warehouse and they said the rest of the band rode in one limo and Jim rode in his own taking massive amounts of opium, drinking straight Jack Daniels, and puking his guts out. The show was a train wreck.
I'm not crazy about the live shows because of the screechy screams and all that, but their studio albums are timeless. LA Woman is one of my favorites; I wish he would have lived to make 2 or 3 more passed his prime just to see what he had left. His voice on that last album was so worn and raspy, it's hard to believe he was only 26 or 27 years old.
