I'm not denying this. But influence and currently listenability can be bifurcated. Case in point: Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin essentially spawned an entire genre of music. They were wildly influential. And I still like listening to their music. Influence? Check. Aged well? Check.

So we can separate out the questions of influence and musical merit, and my goal was that this is what we would do. I don't care -- in this thread -- how many great bands wouldnt' have made great music if it weren't for the beatles. I care whether the Beatles made great music.

Have you really stopped and listened to albums like Abbey Road or Revolver? Regardless of tastes and subjectivity, it's hard to imagine anyone would put The Doors over The Beatles.

There are several bands that -- because of their general popularity -- I've made concerted efforts to listen to their music and give it a chance even after I didn't love it on first listen.* I'm really open minded about music. I never want to be the old guy on the message board that makes a comment about the Beatles holding up and hip hop holding up liquor stores.

Anyway, my dad likes the beatles. He doesn't love them, but he likes them. I've listened to the CDs that he has. Abbey Road definitely. Sgt. peppers definitely. Either Rubber Soul or Revolver...possibly both...not sure. The names of the other albums aren't popping in my head. My point is that, yes, I think I have given them a fair shake.

*Beatles. Widespread. Radiohead.** All Jazz.***
**I'm actually about to revisit Radiohead with more of an emphasis on their newer stuff.
***I may never "get" Jazz music, but I will go down trying.

I don't really understand your point... Is it I just want to hear from people who share my point of view and will tell me how right I am??? Or are you wanting debate.

I don't know. Maybe a little of both.

I love a good debate too. But debates about music don't always work out so well.

There are several Beatles songs that are better than most music written and recorded in that last 40 years. I much prefer their early music to the latter. I think this is because Lennon-McCartney did work more as a team back then. The harmonies and melody of songs like "If I Fell" are timeless. Recording a song like "Eleanor Rigby" with nothing but a violin is pure genius. But they also recorded some real crap. Yellow Submarine? Come Together? Hey Jude? When I'm 64? I could go without ever hearing those again. I like them. I don't worship them, but their body of work is stronger than most. So I would say it holds up.

They were great because it was the 60's and they were in the middle of it. Started as a boy band and grew as musicians as the teeny boppers who loved them grew up. That NEVER happens.

Their early stuff is meh. But it WAS pop fluff. Yesterday is an awesome song. Tough as frick to sing. Then sing it while playing piano.

Have to remember it has been 40 frikkin years. It has aged well. Better than The Andrews Sisters did in the 1970's.

Why don't you investigate what the artists you think are better then the Beatles think about the Beatles? They thought the Beatles were a big deal.

Some of you clowns need to stop listening to Nickelback, Boy George or whatever the hell you've been listening to and improve your taste.

VH1 did their 100 greatest artists of all time segment a few years ago and The Beatles ran away with #1. At the end of the segment, they noted that over half of the voters weren't even born when the Beatles broke up.

Proof that their music has more than held up over time.

Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road are legendary albums that will always be loved and admired by generations to come.

especially considering they didn't do any concerts for substantial part of their existence.

A lot of their music would not have sounded good live in their post-tour era.

The Beatles: does their music hold up?

Yes they do, but they are easily thrown aside for two reasons:

1) It's impossible to live up to the legacy. Impossible. Nothing is the best ever, simple as that. The more the Beatles fans push, the more people push back.

2) Their attachment to culture makes them undiscovered for anyone. And try as we might, music is partially about FINDING something we CONNECT with. That's hard to do when...well, see #1.

Irrelevant. Like I said in my post, people just feel like the answer is the Beatles because they've always been told the answer was the Beatles.

Do y'all remember the "post your ten favorite Led Zep tracks" thread on here? People's top ten lists were substantially varied from one another, and you saw a lot of "oh yeah, I forgot about that song...I love that song" posts. This happens in real life too, and not just with Zep. I've heard people say: "oh man, I love Tangerine" or "God Only Knows is a seriously great song" or "ooh ooh ooh this is the Teenage Wasteland song". And you've heard it too.

Have you ever in your entire life heard somebody say "oh man, play Hey Jude again. I fricking love this track!"? I haven't. In fact, I can't recall ever hearing somebody speak of a Beatles track as their favorite track or even as a track they love. And I'm not saying this for hyperbole's sake.* I'm being completely serious.

"oh yeah, hard days night is GREAT song"...words I have never heard uttered.

*I have no grudge against the Beatles. Ringo Starr didn't bang my mom.

You cant post something like this and try to be taken seriously. No one says the Beatles for the sake of it. You basically have half the responses of a thread as evidence.

That was The Who my friend. Not Zep. I have just disregarded your previous posts for this.

How mad would you be if I told you Zeppelin sucks, and I don't think there music holds up? Taking all your criteria about regardless of spawning other genres and styles? Then I told you that Zeppelin makes my ears bleed and that they are very bland. I can't listen to their songs on my ipod all day/ The Doors, the beatles, Stones, Hendrix are all better than Zeppelin? These are all my statements, so everyone is wrong. That's what you are doing.
Beatles aren't your cup of tea...Guess what...

Oh, I'd barely be able to contain my anger. I'm not sure how I would be able to go on function normally. The rage would consume me.

Would you like to be the keeper of the tally? I feel comfortable delegating this responsibility to you if you're up to the task.

Here ya go. Do a thread like this but for the Beatles instead. The results will be informative.
