If you are good, play for a long time you will be successful, however they define success. If you want to be a "mainstream" success, sell lots of records and hire a publicists. 99% of bands out there are just bland, and don't separate themselves from the crowd.

Since Baloo mentioned y'allternative, I'll throw out Old 97's. They have some kind of hybrid power pop Americana twang. Rhett Miller is a great songwriter. Check our Murder (or a Heart Attack) or Nineteen.

This is who I was going to say as well.
Muddy Jesus is still one of the best songs I've ever heard.
I've seen him live about 8 times. He was always putting on a great show until the last time I saw him.....

And some bands are not trying to sell a bunch of records, really. They'd like to, but it's not their first goal. Some bands are trying to make an artistic statement, and it means you ain't gonna sell a lot of records. the best way to sell a ton of records is to aim right for the middle. Adventurous bands/movies/shows are always gonna do smaller numbers than really well made middlebrow entertainment.

I dont think anything with a country slant is typically going to be "huge" on pop radio...
That said, I think of the Old 97's as relatively big. Remember when they played the bayou.
I also think of Spoon as relatively big, they finally got their due on Merge after Sire fricked them over... Series of Sneaks and Girls Can Tell are mighty fine records, might fine...

I'd throw You Am I into the conversation, although they are big in Australia... I guess I understand in the sense that their lyrics are probably too "australian"

Cannibal Corpse were in Ace Ventura, how much more mainstream can they get? They're one of the biggest names in death metal history and have only gotten more popular in recent years. I've seen them pack the HOB a few times and they play pretty high on the bill on all the big European metal festivals. They really can't get any bigger than they are now.
