I've steadily grown to like country music as I've gotten older. However, I've recently discovered this style of country music. I find it significantly better than what's on the radio aside from a few artists (Eric Church, Zac Brown, Chris Stapleton to name a few). What is it about this style that makes it better?

Because it's real men singing about real issues. Tough times with your lady, losing your favorite dog, drinking beer with your buddies down by the river, things that everyday gents can relate to. It's a damn shame BR doesn't get much Red Dirt shows anymore.

Singer/SONGWRITERS. Not just singers. And many can play their own instruments.

Genuine question. Who is the Elvis of Red Dirt? I assume it is Robert Earl Keen?

I think a lot of origins point to Waylon, Willie, and Merle.

Thats too far back. and really the origins of modern country music, no? Anybody who wrote with Johnny Cash is out IMO.

Like saying Elvis is the father of Seattle Music.

I never really knew about the red dirt genre until I stumbled across the Bayou Country Superfest one year. Amazing fest, with some really under-appreciated red dirt acts.

Since we are on the topic of who helped start it, who is THE artist that someone just started listening to this should check out?

Next, start a station on iHeart Radio or similar deal(Pandora leaves genre) with any of the following:

Son Volt
Uncle Tupelo
Jayhawks

You may like a lot of what's played.

THE album is Robert Earl Keen - No. 2 Live Dinner (1996)...though it came out long before "red dirt" was a term

Another I'd consider Randy Rogers Band - Rollercoaster

From there you can branch off in many directions

Good suggestions.

I'd also recommend some of the old Pat Green stuff, like Three Days.

Cody Canada & The Departed

Stoney LaRue

Cody Johnson

Charlie Robison

Cody Jinks

Micky & The Motorcars

Josh Ward

Wade Bowen

Turnpike Troubadours

They just had a music fest in Steamboat Springs a couple weeks ago. I'd say most on the list are pretty legit.

Would Whiskey Myers fall under this category?

I'd say so.

I've been addicted to this radio station from around Fort Worth, 95.9 The Ranch. They have a great online stream that I listen to at my desk pretty much every single day. All they play is Texas Country/Red Dirt. Great way to discover new artists.

They'll also play a little Whiskey Myers on there every now and then.

I'm going to see Terry Allen in February. he's pretty old now but had a big influence on these younger texas guys.

Allen’s deeply moving (and hilarious) critically acclaimed satirical second album Lubbock (on everything)1979, a complex memory palace to West Texas hometown, is often cited as the urtext of alt-country, one of the most important and influential country records of all time.

Don't think you can leave Pat Green out this either

I agree with the other 2 as well

If you like Texas Country, IMO there is no one better than Jerry Jeff Walker.

The difference is its genuine.
Nashville Country acts today are largely manufactured pop stars that sing the songs nashville writes for them with the same set of buzzwords and chord progressions, with just enough steel guitar, fiddle, and/or banjo to give it a twang.

Red Dirt is to Nashville as a real hamburger is to McDonald's. Once you taste both, it's hard to believe people think they could be remotely the same thing.
