1. Persuasion by Richard and Teddy (his son) Thompson. LINK The Perfect song. From Richard Thompson,(co-written with Tim Finn) the master. Teddy's harmonies bring this one over the top.

2. She Runs Away by Duncan Sheik (sparse and stripped down with gorgeous arrangement and mood-setting slide guitar. Shaking the DS haters because that ending... LINK

3. Here In The Western World by Steely Dan-this makes my top five Dan songs, it's kind of a forgotten gem. It taps into that specific 70's melancholy mood that just doesn't exist anymore. Impeccable. That guitar solo, those keyboards, those backing vocals, that phrasing, it just doesn't get better than this. LINK

4. Never My Love by Donnie Hathaway. Best vocal ever ? Is this the best vocal ever ? You are god damned right this is the BEST VOCAL EVER. (with apologies to all the other best vocals ever). Holy shite. That voice. What could this man not do ? LINK

5. Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens. Really I know you either get Sufjan or you don't but I don't see how you can deny this song. Of course it's just one of 20 others equally gorgeous. One moment spare and bleak, the next celebratory and optimistic with these magnificent word pictures, the melancholy, the sadness, the song takes us somewhere completely different. A national treasure half the time, mildly annoying the other half, Sufjan gonna Sufjan: LINK

6. Prairie Wedding by Mark Knopfler. Only Mark Knopfler could take us to a 19th century wedding in the American prairie. There is an entire movie inside this song, narrated perfectly for maximum emotional impact.. This song belongs in any discussion of his best songs. A truly flawless song. LINK

7.Silent House by Crowded House. The brilliant Neil Finn brought a vocal clarity to this borrowed song and a darkness that matched the subject matter. An emotionally devastating walk into death and loss-matched by Finn's savage messy guitar. Like half the Crowded House/Finn catalogue-I can't believe everybody isn't jamming this every day. LINK

8. Chalkhills and Children by XTC. The best bedtime song ever. Put it on a loop and listen as you go to sleep. All hail Andy Partridge, the highly-literate poet laureate of English pop. LINK

9.One of These Things First by Nick Drake. Enough said. LINK

10. Walk Away Renee by Jimmy Lafave included because Jimmy just passed away and he did such a gorgeous version of this song. This is how I choose to remember this under-the-radar-great. That gravely voice, he just nails this song live here LINK

Very few people alive today have ever heard of Donnie Hathaway and even fewer have ever heard this song. It's a damn shame. He was an otherworldly talent, had a short and tragic career (schizophrenia) and died at age 34 before he secured his rightful spot. One of my musical heroes.

Right. Amy Winehouse is dead (Hathaway was a demigod to her).

Eric Anders - Blister in the Sun

One of my all time favorite covers. Totally transforms the song into something completely different from the original.

I don't find it cheesy at all. Maybe a bit "inside baseball", so maybe not as accessible as say Aerosmith. I find it to be textbook Sufjan confessional stream of consciousness narrative. He's looking back with a friend on specific events. Kind of like Michael Stipe-he creates these highly-specific word pictures that get the emotional point across. Like talking to a friend where the other person gets the reference instead of explaining every detail as you would with a stranger.

Saw him a couple of times at a listening room. Really liked this song and his renditions of Bob Dylan stuff. He would only maintain a high note for an instant, but it worked for him and I liked his music.

It's the forced rhyming that always gets the best of people.
