"Techno" "Alternative" and "Punk" - Three Very Abused Words

I'm seeing it happening here on the music board all of the time. Any sort of electronica, dubstep, jungle, trance, trip-hop, etc. is all lumped into this generic term "Techno."
Same with the term "Punk Rock." If it's not played on the Eagle 98.1 it's considered punk rock or "Alternative."
I heard someone here recently refer to the Cramps (which I would label as Rockabilly) as "punk" which made me revisit this subject.

The Cramps were equal parts punk and rockabilly... id say punkabilly

Seriously tho, much of the new music of today cross several platforms/genres, tough to call them any one thing really.
But I know what you mean by people calling Freestyle dance music "techno", etc. No use correcting them either as most folks DGAF.

Punk doesn't describe music anyway. It was a scene. Lots of different music came out of it.

Punk refers -- or at least referred -- to a certain musical style: uptempo, power chord guitars stressed, few if any keyboards
New wave could mean anything: Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Patti Smith, Power pop, rockabilly revivalist (Robert Gordon), art rock (Talking Heads), Television, Devo.... Some people even try to include the synthpop bands of the early 80s as "new wave" (got into an argument on the OT about that once

I guess in the sense of rock it would be bands that were released on independent labels or not off of one of the major labels. One's that were nto being played on popular radio stations.
But after the mid nineties, I think alternative ceased to exist.
that's only a guess.
I always hated the term New Wave.

People have been doing that for years. I've been fighting the "Techno" battle forever.

If people know to what you refer, I don't care what they call it. And punk is far more diverse than you give it credit for, largely because as mnay pointed out, it's more about the scene and method of prodction than the music. Talking Heads were a punk band.
I'm just not a genre purist, especially for catchall terms like punk or techno.
