I am probably a better guitarist than Lee Ranaldo & Thurston Moore. Sonic Youth gets an A in coolness, but as far as "great guitarists" they get a D. A jazzmaster + droning feedback does not make a "great guitarist".

Steve Albini? PJ Harvey? Lou Reed? Neil Young? Kim Thayil? Billy COrgan? Stone Gossard?
These guys are not that good. Like not in the top 100,000 guitarists of all time good. At all.

I would definitely have Neil Young in the top 100. Being a great guitarist isn't just about technical skill. Some of his stuff with crazy horse is amongst the best rock n'roll ever made.

I love this list more than I should just because it trolls the crap out of baby boomers. The only rock god they worship is Tony Iommi, which is also great in its own way.
It's a list that honors non-blues based players and instead tends towards the avant garde. I don't think the list is definitive, but I do like a fresh way of looking at it, and a lot of these guys do have a case for being great guitarists. It's partly about who's left out, just because that's funny as hell, but it is interesting to see guys who usually don't get honored, get praised.
Guitarists are the biggest threat to rock n roll. Left to their own devices, they will suck all of the energy and soul out of it.
I love any list that honors D Boon. Though John Cale should've been top ten by their standards.
