Appetite for Destruction is just an iconic album. It was massive, but its not just sales, it just grabs you by the throat from start to finish. Rush has great albums, but nothing like that.
For me, the 2 band that really capture what I think of as Rock n Roll, attitude, music, image are the Rolling Stones and Guns N' Roses.

shite, I would put Motley Crue ahead of GnR in that regard. They were more "rock and roll" than any band, ever.. when it comes to image and attitude.

I disagree and the music is not nearly as good or blues based as GnR.
The Motley Crue behind the music is one of the best though.

I don't remember Van Halan being much of a motel trashing,supermodel banging,dope shooting headline grabber. Just a bunch of drunks with ego issues. Great band,I think that's what he meant by Rock n Roll attitude and image

I love early Van Halen, that's a good choice, so its Motley Crue (even though I can't really stand them). Both embody RnR, but to me GnR does more so that's all.

GnR hit to failure rate was extremely high. Even their cover success rate was off the chart high. The other thing is if you listen to all their stuff today it still sounds great. There was a lot of stuff I liked at that time that sounds very dated, but their stuff seems immune from that. To me they are a no brainer to the RnR HoF.

I think there was a story about them celebrating their first platinum record in New Orleans and a limo got over turned. I'm sure they trashed their fair share of hotel rooms.
Lots of bands fit the profile: The Who, The Kinks, Led Zepplin, but for me the Stones just capture it better.

I actually agree (though I disagree about Blyleven not belonging in the basbeall Hall -- he's only 5th all-time in strikeouts and possessed a legendary curveball). I think if we had a RNR HOF metric, the Beastie Boys would score better than almost any other American band. but that's neither here nor there.
My basic point is that the HOF is Jann Wenner's plaything and he hates prog rock. Well, Jann and I don't exactly see eye to eye on rock n roll (though we do agree on prog rock). He's largely eeping out the great 80s punk bands, like Fugazi. Now, I think by an objective rock n roll history standpoint, Fugazi is a definite Hall of Fame band. However, they aren't ever ever getting in, nor do I much care. And I love Fugazi.
Now, Rush isn't getting in either, and what makes this funny to me is that their fans, largely, DO care. And it's hysterical. Jann Wenner's never gonna love you, but Rush fans keep talking about this injustice, like anyone considers the rock HOF as legitimate. If it was an independent body, rush is hard to keep out as the representative prog rock band, along with Yes and Genesis.

Musically they were not as good as GnR, but as far as image, no one screams Rock and Roll like Motley Crue, as far as image goes.

Yes, I'm a Rush fan. But I could care less if they get in. I'm not sure I could name that many bands that are in HOF without it being total guessing. With music it just isn't that important to me. I think Rush is too polished possibly. As much as I like their music, the guys are pretty boring and approach their music in a professional manner. No bad attitudes, social disruptions, no extroverted personalities, etc. nothing real exiting. Maybe this is why many don't care for it. There's no doubt all three are talented though. I like their music when I hear it and apparently some others do to. If they do get in congrats, if not oh well. I dont' ever see The Cult getting but it's not going to stop me from jamming to Memphis Hip Shake in my underwear at 2am and disturbing my neighbors.
But If I did care, GNR is a band what Rock-n-Roll represent to me. I remember at the time when they were hyping this band as the predecessors of The Stones because of the music, style, lifestyle, attitudes.
I'll have to admit though, I did get pretty daggum sick of Sweet Child o Mine. I saw GNR open for The Cult(2nd plug) in 87. Thought it was a pretty kick arse band live and Appetite had only been released for a few weeks at the time. I remember picking it up and seeing Welcome to the Jungle video a few weeks later and thinking why are they trying to give that band the Hair Metal look. Anyway, that song never took initially. But by May of 88 Sweet Child seemed like it was coming on the radio or MTV every 5 minutes. Shortly after that I about got sick of hearing everybody in the world playing the shite out of that record. However, I love going back and listening to it now.
Pretty Blah on Lies, and for my own odd reason, Use Your Illusion II is the only one I cared for and owned.
Oh well, i rambled on and nmot sure the point of this post except that I like Rush, don't care about the HOF, and GNR should be in it if I did care.

I kinda agree with that, people getting upset about it is funny.
Eddie Trunk goes off about it all the time.
I like the idea and wish there was an independent body that could be more objective, but oh well. The museum is really cool and I highly recommend the dual RnR HOF and Pro Football HOF trip.

Use Your Illusion is among the greatest releases of the 90's.
If GnR doesn't belong in the Hall, I am not sure who should. Love them or hate them, they are among the most influential and famous bands of the late 80's-mid 90's.

Rush? No doubt they are good musicians with a very loyal following. And that's fine. They're just not my cup of tea. To my ear, it's a lot of self-indulgent riffing, pretentious lyrics and very little real rock 'n roll.
G&R? Had one great album and an arguably good one. They were sort of a refreshing antidote to the vacuous hair bands of the 80's.
Van Halen? Maybe it's an age thing, but I always thought of them as a fairly middle of the road band for teenagers.
Motley Crue? I could never take them seriously in any way. Just some guys who could sort of play but were more concerned about their Sunset Strip image than real music.
Apparently, the 80's aren't my favorite decade.
