I used to think the song I Can Help by Billy Swan was by Ringo Starr. I can still hear why I thought that was Ringo.
Me too! I later found out that Ringo actually did do a version of that song.

I also assumed several AIC songs were Nirvana when I heard them on the radio.

For the longest time I thought "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac was a Grand Funk Railroad song.

Probably.
Anybody remember a band in the late 70's called Klaatu? They sounded a lot like the Beatles too. There were no names in the liner notes and a rumor was going around (probably started by the band's management) that it was actually the Beatles on the DL. Turned out not to be true of course.
Klaatu - Sub Rosa Subway

Suspicion - Terry Stafford
Could have sworn that was Elvis the first time I heard it.

Sam Bobrick, who co-wrote this song, later became a longtime scriptwriter for The Andy Griffith Show.

The Sisters of Mercy, "This Corrosion" - thought it was David Bowie

When I was about 14 I thought 'Come Together' by the Beatles was the Rolling Stones.
And I thought 'I Love You' by Klimaxx Blues Band was a Paul McCartney solo song.
And around the same age I thought 'I Can't Tell You Why' by the Eagles was the Bee Gees.

Always thought All the Young Dudes was Bowie.
Thought "Here I Go Again" was Sammy Hagar

Ya know, there’s a little bit of difference between Procol Harum and Skynard. Just a little bit.

I was positive that this was Bowie when I first heard it...though I could also see where some would think that it was Iggy Pop.
