Incubus - Absolution Calling

(This is a fairly intimate experience to share, but this song gave me tears of joy like no song has before when I finally understood it. It took me YEARS and a hundred listens for me to finally get it. I would try to understand, but couldn't. I've even asked other people in past years. And in the summer of 2020, it was playing in the background and just smacked me straight in the face. And I wept tears of joy. Hundreds and thousands of hours of listening to music in the pandemic, alone in a room, nowhere to run. Music saved my life and taught me a strength and calm that I've never had before, and this song was BIGTIME for me. I finally get it when people say "music saved my life". The smartest decision I ever made was to just dive right into music like never before and trust myself and my instincts again.)

It's like an intuition, or a feeling in the air
An intangible impression that's always everywhere
You bit into the apple, laid down your sword and shield
(Untie! A little bit dies, a little each time, the medicine smiles)
Then spun round like a gyre in the unified field
(Inside, your elegant guide, an arrow in flight, a million miles)

I remember feeling the opposite of falling
(Into that spot, where we untie every knot)
Spinning past the ceiling, absolution calling
Are you there, or not?

It's an open invitation, come see the sights of sages
We've been a pride of lions, so afraid to leave our cages
Don't fret over the pieces that smolder in the sun
(Untie! A little bit dies, a little each time, the medicine smiles)
Cause nothing can be broken when everything is one
(Inside, your elegant guide, an arrow in flight, a million miles)

I remember feeling the opposite of falling
(Into that spot, where we untie every knot)
Spinning past the ceiling, absolution calling
Are you there, or not?

I remember feeling the opposite of falling
(Into that spot, where we untie every knot)
Spinning past the ceiling, absolution calling
Are you there, or not?

You bit into the apple, laid down your sword and shield
(Untie! A little bit dies, a little each time, the medicine smiles)
Then spun round like a gyre in the unified field
(Inside, your elegant guide, an arrow in flight, a million miles)

I remember feeling the opposite of falling
(Into that spot, where we untie every knot)
Spinning past the ceiling, absolution calling
Are you there, or not?

I remember feeling the opposite of falling
(Into that spot, where we untie every knot)
Spinning past the ceiling, absolution calling
Are you there, or not?

BONUS Lyric

This is my favorite isolated lyric from the past year probably:

From Slaves' "Talk to a Friend"

I spend the next five lines asking bad questions
How could I hit rock bottom never learning a lesson?
Do I deserve this hurting?
If my body goes limp, would I float to the surface?
Or can I live in a world with no purpose?
How could I change when I'm still the same person?

On the surface, they look like reasonable, logical questions. Questions 90+% of people would ask. But they are all bad questions. They all are looking the wrong direction, into the past. The period we can't do anything about or change. There is only learning from mistakes and looking forward. It's a clever as hell lyric.

Good questions
Who do I want to be?
Where do I want to go?
How do I get there?
How do I make amends for past wrongs?
Objectvely, what are my weaknesses and how do I become better?

Etc. etc.

You'd rather see me in the pen
Than me and Lorenzo rollin' in the Benzo
Beat a police outta shape
And when I'm finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still getting swole off bread and water

My man, never knew you were a GnR fan. I loved and breathed GnR in my teenage years. Soaked up everything I could read and hear about Axl and the Guns. I know, it’s not cool anymore to have loved their music but I still think Axl is lyrical genius even those he’s an insanely narcissistic bitch. I didn’t know that then

[Verse 1]
Take your drink
To the end of the bar buddy
Let her stay there
Now don’t be a fool
I’d as soon have a hot seat in Sing-Sing prison
Than to sit down by her on that stool

[Chorus]
What’s that you say
I guess you’re right
It’s nothing to me

[Verse 2]
See that man
She belongs to him buddy
Better drink up and go while you can
I can tell by the way he looks at you buddy
That he’s sure a quick-tempered jealous man

[Chorus]
What’s that you say
I guess you’re right
It’s nothing to me

[Verse 3]
There you are
Stretched out on the floor buddy
Now you see what you made him do
Her they come to take him off
To jail buddy
And tomorrow someone will bury you
Oh well that’s life
Or it was
Its nothing to me

Nine planets around the sun
Only one does the sun embrace
Upon this watered one
So much we take for granted

So let us sleep outside tonight
Lay down in our mother's arms
For here we can rest safely

If green should turn to grey
Would our hearts still bloody beat?
If the mountains tumble away, the river dry
Would it stop the stepping feet?

So let us sleep outside tonight
Lay down in our mother's arms
For here we can rest safely

Take all that we can get
When it's done
Nobody left to bury here
Nobody left to dig the holes
And here we can rest safely

One sweet world
Around a star is spinning
One sweet world
And in her breath, I'm swimming
And here I will rest in peace

One Sweet World.- Dave Matthews

"Coyote" - Joni Mitchell

No regrets Coyote
We just come from such different sets of circumstance
I'm up all night in the studios
And you're up early on your ranch
You'll be brushing out a brood mare's tail
While the sun is ascending
And I'll just be getting home with my reel to reel
There's no comprehending
Just how close to the bone and the skin and the eyes
And the lips you can get
And still feel so alone
And still feel related
Like stations in some relay
You're not a hit and run driver no no
Racing away
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway

We saw a farmhouse burning down
In the middle of nowhere
In the middle of the night
And we rolled right past that tragedy
Till we turned into some road house lights
Where a local band was playing
Locals were up kicking and shaking on the floor
And the next thing I know
That coyote's at my door
He pins me in a corner and he won't take no
He drags me out on the dance floor
And we're dancing close and slow
Now he's got a woman at home
He's got another woman down the hall
He seems to want me anyway
Why'd you have to get so drunk
And lead me on that way
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway

I looked a coyote right in the face
On the road to Baljennie near my old home town
He went running thru the whisker wheat
Chasing some prize down
And a hawk was playing with him
Coyote was jumping straight up and making passes
He had those same eyes just like yours
Under your dark glasses
Privately probing the public rooms
And peeking thru keyholes in numbered doors
Where the players lick their wounds
And take their temporary lovers
And their pills and powders to get them thru this passion play
No regrets Coyote
I'll just get off up aways
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway

Coyote's in the coffee shop
He's staring a hole in his scrambled eggs
He picks up my scent on his fingers
While he's watching the waitresses' legs
He's too far from the Bay of Fundy
From appaloosas and eagles and tides
And the air conditioned cubicles
And the carbon ribbon rides
Are spelling it out so clear
Either he's going to have to stand and fight
Or take off out of here
I tried to run away myself
To run away and wrestle with my ego
And with this flame
You put here in this Eskimo
In this hitcher
In this prisoner
Of the fine white lines
Of the white lines on the free free way

Please let there be light
In a darkened room
All the precious times
Have been put to rest again
And the smile of the dawn
Brings tainted lust singing my requiem
Can I face the day
When I'm tortured in my trust
And watch it crystalize
While my salvation it crumbles to dust
Why can't I steer the ship before it hits the storm
I've fallen to the sea but still I swim for shore

In a Darkened Room - Skit Row (Song about child abuse)

quote:

There's a cold wind out tonight
The chill of distant eyes
An orbit survey finds...your mind

I will remember
You will remember
The star that came tonight...

There's a thought that fills your mind
A vision of time
When knowledge was confined
And then we wonder how machines
Can steal each other's dreams
From points that are unseen...It's real

An ode to mental illness from the ultimate psycho himself:

Diary of a Madman

Screaming at the window
Watch me die another day
Hopeless situation
Endless price I have to pay

Sanity now it's beyond me
There's no choice

Diary of a madman
Walk the line again today
Entries of confusion
Dear diary, I'm here to stay

Manic depression befriends me
Hear his voice
Sanity now it's beyond me
There's no choice

A sickened mind and spirit
The mirror tells me lies
Could I mistake myself for someone
Who lives behind my eyes?
Will he escape my soul
Or will he live in me?
Is he trying to get out
Or trying to enter me?

Voices in the darkness
Scream away my mental health
Can I ask a question
To help me save me from myself?

Enemies fill up the pages
Are they me
Monday 'till Sunday in stages
Set me free

Just about anything by Pink Floyd. Roger Waters was an amazing lyricist who could take a dry philosophical subject and make it poetic. The lyrics from "Time" which discuss the phenomenon of time seemingly going faster as you get older:

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

A Million Year Ago - Amy Winehouse

I know I'm not the only one
Who regrets the things they've done
Sometimes I just feel it's only me
Who can't stand the reflection that they see

I wish I could live a little more
Look up to the sky, not just the floor
I feel like my life is flashing by
And all I can do is watch and cry

I miss the air, I miss my friends
I miss my mother, I miss it when
Life was a party to be thrown
But that was a million years ago

“Set Fire To The Rain” from Adele has some of my favorite imagery to imagine.

But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name
Your name

Just the idea of it pouring, hand outstretched, setting fire to the rain and the past behind you, touching that ex-lover’s face, and the tears that come as that face melts away with your caressing hand.

Side note: there’s about 3 mashups that I’ve actually play listed out of listening to hundreds of crap ones, and the Adele/Linkin Park one is for me probably the best fit.

Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover

Something in the way she woos me
I don't wanna leave her now
You know I believe and how
Somewhere in her smile she knows

That I don't need no other lover
Something in her style that shows me
I don't wanna leave her now
You know I believe and how

You're asking me, will my love grow?
I don't know, I don't know

You stick around, now it may show
I don't know, I don't know

Something in the way she knows
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the things she shows me

I don't wanna leave her now
You know I believe and how

Something by George Harrison and sung by The Beatles.
