My "moment" was in 1984, when a friend said, "listen to this." He then played the song "Pretty Persuasion," by REM.

Music to me WAS MTV and pop/rock radio until around college. I want to say A Perfect Circle and Tool sort of opened my mind to other types of music, but listening to Modest Mouse's "Moon and Antarctica" probably changed everything for me.
I used to frequent a few bands' fan message boards and that pretty much helped me discover many of of my favorite bands.

Had a cousin 6 years older than me who lived next door. He'd come back from college and use my computer to download songs. Ended up with stuff like Bright Eyes, Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown, Uncle Tupelo/Wilco/Son Volt. I was never a huge pop music listener, but that broadened me past Creed type stuff that was popular in 6th grade.
Pandora blew the doors off in college though.

Your stories? When did you realize that MTV and pop radio who overplayed Sly foxx to Poison to Taylor Dayne to Falco to Billy Ocean was not what you were after? Who was your first?
True CSB, when Joel Rundell transferred to my junior high and pulled out the B52s Rock Lobster and Trio's Dah Dah Dah at our end of year party.
I was pretty much blown away; this was in like 1981!

Perfect Circle,
Grew up in bayou county on Zeppelin. At about 15 my friend told me about a song that sounded real "acoustic." Shows how relative that can seem to the time. It was Southern Central Rain.

Scruff The Cat - You Dirty RatThis was one of many songs that I discovered because of MTV and never heard anywhere else. Played it a lot at Murphy's and got lots of good feedback.

In the mid-80s, I was all-in on Top 40 and hair bands...until I stumbled upon The Electrifying Mojo on a radio station I didn't know existed. I declared myself a member of the Midnight Funk Association. I would tune in at 10:00pm, as that's when the "landing of the Mothership" occurred.
I was hearing things like 8th Wonder,Kraftwerk, Whodini, Slick Rick, etc. for the first time. It was pretty exciting, because every song that came on was unlike anything I'd ever heard, and I liked all of it. It was like finding buried treasure.

I think this influenced my music selections more than anything.

I saw a young kid wearing a retro Thrasher shirt the other day. Was weird.
I listened to all kinds of radio growing up. In Houston we had a Pacifica station and KTRU from Rice, which played all kinds of shite. Also had older siblings so I was aware of stuff like the Violent Femmes and The Cure and whatnot. Probably exposed to more of that stuff since we didn't have cable most of the 80s, though there was Friday Night Videos.

TBS and USA Network had the best music video shows. Friday night videos just tried to copy their success.
Night Flight got incredibly weird after midnight and to this day I'm not sure if I preferred Lisa Robinson or Kathryn McKinley on Radio 1990.
Eta I saw Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains for the first time..uncensored on USA late at night. Diane Lane got nekked
and Monday when I got to school nobody believed me.
That was my favorite movie for years and it was impossible to find on video or broadcast anywhere which probably built it up even more in my adolescent mind since none of my friends thought it existed and that I made the whole thing up.

I'll split the difference and go 4, 9. I sang Rockville to my son as a lullaby for about 3 years. One of his favorites.

Thats tricky, because MTV had the shows 120 Minutes for alternative/new wave music, and Head Bangers Ball for metal. So while they def overplayed the popular stuff in general, they did have an avenue for those of us who had more eclectic taste in music.

I always wanted to hear a good country voice remake it. Like Clint Black or similar.

I'm old.
In the late 70's had friends who played guitar who got into Ramones / Tubes / Adam Ant / Sex Pistols, etc...
Then by early 80's I was a DJ at KLPI, the 100w blowtorch at La Tech / Ruston. I ended up with the Sat nite 10-2 shift, affectionately known as the "Bongwater" show.
As a DJ at a college radio station, you have access to all the promos for everything under the sun. So MTV was never a part of my musical experience. Even now I can't listen to regular radio.
Shite...guess I'm a snob.

I saw this in 1984 on MTV and sent me in a whole new direction in music.

REM's fall was spectacular.

I'd have thought by now, some country artist would have covered #9.
