Randy California of the band Spirit drowned while saving his son in a rip current. The son lived.

It’s hard to make the case for the superlative “saddest”.

Others have been mentioned already that are probably better suited for the title, however…

Sam Cooke.

He had an incredible run including the ultimate civil rights song.

He was killed by a motel manager while drunk AF trying to find a girl (who was fleeing from him) he’d brought to the hotel.

I would’ve said Dennis Wilson at any time and not within days after his brother died.

Drowned while diving for items belonging to his ex wife that he tossed in the water three years earlier.

It is sad that people believe that story that was spread by her agent who didn't want people think she died of an overdose. She died in her sleep of a heart attack with no drugs in her system. Keith Moon would die in the same bedroom four years later. He did have drugs in his system.

I agree with you on sinead, she deserved better out of her life. Terry Kath is one not mentioned here yet

quote:

On Monday, January 23, after a party at the home of roadie and band technician Don Johnson, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Kath began to play with his guns. He spun his unloaded .38 revolver on his finger, put it to his temple, and pulled the trigger. Johnson warned Kath several times to be careful. Kath picked up a semi-automatic 9 mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson, "Don't worry about it ... Look, the clip is not even in it". His last words were, "What do you think I'm gonna do? Blow my brains out?"

I'm going to say Keith Whitley. Just an amazing voice and still relatively young.

That really was tragic. He was the heart and soul of that band, and an incredible guitarist !

Tough to watch. Cars final interview before pancreatic cancer took Orr at 53.

He played with "Super group" Big People until a few weeks before he passed, saying in effect that he wanted to play until they had to drag him onstage.

Kirsty MacColl..

quote:

On 18 December 2000, she and her sons went diving at the Chankanaab reef, part of the National Marine Park of Cozumel, in a designated diving area where watercraft were restricted from entering. With the group was a local veteran divemaster, Iván Díaz. As the group was surfacing from a dive, a powerboat moving at high speed entered the restricted area. MacColl saw the boat coming before her sons did. Louis, aged 13 at the time, was not in its path, but Jamie, then aged 15, was. She was able to push him out of the way (he sustained minor head and rib injuries), but she was struck by the powerboat, which ran over her. MacColl suffered severe chest and head injuries and died instantly.

Some boat hand took the rap for his millionaire boss... was sentenced to ~ 3 years in prison, but avoided the time by paying less than $100 fine.. and paid a little bet 2K in restitution to her family..
