They evolved into something different, but were still great, evolved again after Gilmour left, and that was the end.
Sometimes the total weighed as one outweighs the sum of all the individual parts if that makes sense.

The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall. Pretty good run of four albums right there. He is a complete jackass though. It's almost funny at this point.

Roger Waters and Pink Floyd, as a group, only continue to exist due to the brilliance of David Gilmour. The band was of little note outside the UK until Gilmour brought his brilliance to the group.
It's the same as with Guns and Roses. Up until Tracii Gunns left and Slash joined the band, they were a regional LA underground band.
Waters acting like a God in the music world when he would be nothing without Gilmour.
