All of this. It’s amazing how folks in creative industries will be shocked that a labor of love isn’t commercially successful while running it like an insular clique. Red Dragon was a great cultural resource, but by refusing to open up its exclusivity to a younger demographic of music fans and performers meant it was always doomed.

Do y’all think we could leverage some bar that doesn’t do well into a venue

I mean I hate telling people to show up when I’m playing but I guess I could if I had to

begged him to book john moreland there like 12 years ago. john wanted $200. he refused to even listen to him I guess.

then years later after moreland is quite popular, he's talking about how he is on the "dream list" of people he would book.

man! you had a shot at establishing that connection and you BLEW IT!

im not just shitting on red dragon. chris did book some great shows. he just had a way of running the place that was not inclusive at all. or it didn't really feel like it.

I didn’t say I think they would book John Fulbright. I just said there are another music venue that could pick up some of the slack. Of course that is if no one picks up the mantle from Chris.

Maxwell relied too much on booking his favorite artists and older artists. His target demographic was 60+ and that demographic is not going to sell out shows every week. His own arrogance and unwillingness to change led to the constant begging for people to attend shows. When he would book “younger” artists, shows would sell out within a few days. Eg. BJ Barham. I will miss seeing shows at the Dragon.

Definitely some truth to this. I'm on his email chain and the begging and pleading was frequent. But seemed like he was in it for his own love of the game, so can't really fault the guy too much.

I've seen some great shows there, Joan Baez and Sonny Landreth among them. I'll have to try to catch one more show before they close. The place has been an institution. I didn't care too much for the shows he hosted at the Manship (much more sterile/stale environment), but Red Dragon will be missed. Hopefully somebody can carry the torch in some way, but what he was doing didn't seem sustainable.

Being a venue catering to original music is not a profitable enterprise. A much better idea would be to create another “home” venue to replace the loss of Bee Nice. I have the go-ahead from my neighborhood association, off-street parking partnerships, and more PA than could ever be needed. I would be happy to host such a series if I could get some passionate people to help volunteer their time to make it possible.

It could be possible to convince a struggling bar to do venue things one day per week or something like that. The success would come down to how good your relationship is with the bar owner, how good you can make the acoustics of the bar, how well you book, and how well you promote.

ETA: the problem isn’t the audiences it’s that music is dying. For every one good band theres like 50 shitty bands so bar owners are better off just putting on free music. Also nobody wants to go out because they CANNOT AFFORD TO GO OUT

Thats why its important to bring in decent acts!

Heard the Red Dragon could be bought out. Its a cool niche venue.

I saw where Moreland is playing that new listening room/theater in South Lake Charles in April. Tickets are $75. As you can imagine, they aren't selling very well. I hear the place has nice sound though.

I heard there were 2 people interested in buying it. Maybe it will continue on.

I've seen a lot of great shows there. Hayes Carll, Chris Knight, Guy Clark, Jason Boland, The Vandoliers, and Dale Watson.

FYI, Brent Cobb will be at the Texas Club on Feb 21

Southlake a great venue. I’ve been several times. Jason Boland was a sold out show last week.

The SouthCoast music series is modeled after venues similar to Red Dragon or Courvilles in Beaumont.

That said. Over 3/4 of tickets are already sold. Tickets usually dont sell out until the week of the show. Thats the LC music market.

How does one buy a nonprofit? I’m not saying it’s not possible but curious.

Where do you see that? I see a bunch of available seats on their site. Don't get me wrong, I hope it sells out.

All the floor seats are sold already. What you’re seeing are the remaining riser seats.

As for buying a non profit, it’s not different than buying any other LLc or company.

My Red Dragon story: I saw Trout Fishing in America there a couple of years ago; after the show I talked to the guys and showed them an album of theirs I bought at the Rusty Nail in Shreveport back around 1983. Had a good little talk with them about the Nail and other long-gone venues, then they autographed the album. They were actually surprised anybody ever bought one, much less still had it.

Side Note: Chelsea’s in Cortana Mall had some great little shows back in the 80’s.

Good riddance. Chris is a clown.

I saw some local kid open with his dad. Played guitar, banjo, and some other stuff. Average at best but felt super forced and fake.

Location was trash.

BR isn’t the listening room type city. Compare it to a place like the Bluebird where you can literally hear a pin drop.

MCB is probably BR’s best spot for this now. Saw David Borne there a year ago and he was great. His latest album, “Genesis”, crushes.
