Their music is about their political views, no preaching in between songs needed to get the msg across.

I'm fine with them bashing the shite out of Trump. I'll still go see them. That's who they are. If they changed their political affiliation the show would fricking suck. Not seeing them at Voodoo last time they went was my biggest concert regret

This is exactly how I feel. Missing them at voodoo is also my greatest music regret. I plan on traveling to Phoenix to see them if you’re in

I love me some Rage Against the Machine but this shite is unbelievably irritating. It's not exactly a rebellious or "different" opinion now...it's THE majority opinion du jour of people between 18 and 30.

On Youtube I saw either an Anti-Flag or Green Day show from near the end of Bush's second term where they were just droning on and on about right-wing capitalism etc. and the crowd got fed up and was like, "SHUT THE frick UP AND PLAY A SONG ALREADY!"

RATM was smart to cash in. They'll make a killing between the nostalgia + all their Marxist imagery. I'm surprised more bands who make their careers whining about Republicans haven't enjoyed a resurgence under Trump: Bad Religion, NOFX, Green Day, Anti-Flag, System of a Down

When I was a young edgy teenager, I bought a RATM hat. Got home and notice on the inside a "Made in China" sticker. Their albums were also sold at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy for $10-$20 each, so I guess capitalism and big business can't be all that bad right?

Yup. I don't understand how someone might be ready to go to a RATM show and put off by politics.

RATM is always politics front and center, and they always have been. They aren't RATM if they're non-political.

While I generally agree that you know (or should know) what you're gonna get, I'll play devil's advocate:

1. It's not 1999 anymore. Their political point of view and ranting is no longer original. Turn on any news station or visit nearly any news website and you'll see people screaming outlandish political stuff into a megaphone.

2. Following point 1, I know that I'm completely sick of politics (both sides) dominating everything. You can't escape it by way of sports, movies, music etc. If people are as fed up with it as I am, they may not want to listen to yet another hour of some brown guys telling them how awful they are.

3. Primarily, I think people go see RATM because they're a band with cool music. Sure, a little political agenda is fine but if you pay whatever the cost of a ticket is (obscene I'm sure) for 20 minutes of music and 40 minutes of ranting, you're probably gonna feel short-changed and pissed.

4. I would anticipate RATM's audience to be predominantly working middle-class white guys between 35 - 50. Those people by and large have grown out of the angsty Gen-x "frick the Government man!" mentality. They work hard, pay their taxes, and just want to relive a little of their youth without some guy who is a multi-millionaire and hasn't worked an honest job in 25 years tell them how hard they have it. Tom Morello is the Colin Kaepernick of music and people are fricking sick of that dude

Yeah, but that's what their band has always been about. If you're considering buying a RATM ticket, you know what you're buying.

It's like if I bought tickets for Metallica and got mad there wasn't much Mumford and Sons style banjo. You buy the ticket for the band.

If RATM spends more time ranting than playing, I can see being mad, but not about politics. Be mad you got shortchanged on actual music.

RATM is as politically forward as it gets. They literally can't play 95% of their songs if they wanted to be apolitical.

Just saw that these guys are headlining Coachella. Couldn't believe my eyes. I saw them at the Reading Festival in 2000 and they are by far the best live band I've ever seen. They worked the crowd like no other and the music sounded just as great live. I hope they announce more shows because I'll definitely be there.

I have to agree with everything you wrote. I guess I'm lucky in the sense that I got to see RATM from the start and actually saw them perform 1993 Lollapalooza (followed by Tool). Back then it was so edgy and original because people didn't get as emotionally invested and dominated by politics as they do now. In fact, the edgy and original thing for a musician to be nowadays is to not be that way, and simply write and perform music.

Commies do a money grab. Slightly ironic.

Not really, they don’t want to share their money, they want to share your money.

#1 A lot of the ticket proceeds are going to charity. They could be making a LOT more money if they wanted to.

#2 Regardless, the idea that anybody who works with a left-wing POV can’t make money or have nice things is a reductive, right-wing red herring.

So they are going to go out & spread their communism & hatred of our capitalist system by...……..using our capitalist system to their advantage by making tons of money & giving some to charity. Makes total sense.

If you go to a RATM show and get pissed when they talk about politics, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

And this whining and hang wringing about another American expressing a view you don’t like is exhausting. I really wish some of you had to live in a place where the predominant politics is opposite of yours for a little while. I did it for 20+ years.

So if you criticize the system you have to go live in a cave like Obi wan?

There’s a demand to see this band, in order to go out on a tour you have to spend a lot of money on venues and support staff, whom they pay a living wage. All of that factored in, their prices are very reasonable.

The fact that they’re willing to tax their own earnings at a much higher rate is proof enough of their principles.

I saw RATM live back in the 90's and have to admit it was one of the best live shows ever- talk about tight musicianship!
I will choose to remember them for that show- in today's world, I don't want to hear a bunch of anti-Trump bullshite...

Such a snowflake.

Wish they were coming to Louisiana, especially since run the jewels is opening most shows.

If I paid to see RATM and they didn’t bash trump*, I would feel cheated. I would feel that they “sold out”.

They’ll probably break up again midway through the tour due to a fight over t shirt designs or something stupid like that. I’m being serious too. Go watch some old interviews with Tom where he’s talking about all the dumb shite they would get into ridiculous fights over. Tom is a certified control freak.
