This was a very fun and engaging thread a few years back. With so much new music out since then along with that thread being buried very deep, I figure let's start this again. Here's the game:

Reply to the last post on the thread only after listening to the song posted and then rate the song on a scale of 1-5 stars. Feel free to write what you thought about it if you so choose. Then post a song you think others should hear and see how the next person rates that.

The last thread had songs from all genres and it ranged from major popular tracks to complete unknowns. I know I found some new bands to listen to as a result as did many others.

Ok, I'll start:

Neal Francis - Changes

I liked that a good bit. Very groovy/funky. Hard for me to rate a song after one listen, but I’d go 4/5.

That has to be on a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack somewhere. Cool vibe 3.5/5 for me.

4/5 Good - Great lyrics

but thought the orchestration glossed over and somewhat hid the grit of his lyrics

Josh Ritter - "Where The Night Goes" (Live at WFUV)
(eta: same song as above - different version)

4/5 wow very nice. it's dylan with vocal clarity. very similar musically, lyrically, orchestration and pacing.

John Prine - Summer's End

this is one where the video really ads to and emphasizes the song (seriously this might be my favorite music video ever. powerful stuff)

You have a great ear. People love to compare Ritter to Dylan. You are right they are very similar.

I really tried to listen, but man, I couldn’t get more than halfway through that song. It’s just...not my style. Very boring standard guitars and the vocals are straight up unpleasant. I mean, I really can’t stand the singer’s voice. Good lyrics, but overall, just not appealing to me at all. It reminded me just how out of step my tastes are with the posters on this board. (1.5/5)

So, rather than post a link to something I would normally listen to, I found something weird yesterday that I’d like to get this board’s opinion on. Definitely something cool and off the beaten path:

Kind of has a Barrie or Clairo sound, which I like.

4/5

I like that one a lot, the pic fits it well. Has a very driving alone at dusk in the desert feel to it. Would make a good end of movie track.

I could listen to this a lot when I am in a mellow, atmospheric mood; however, the singer's voice makes it unpalatable. It ruins what it otherwise a very good song. This is one of those things I have never understood with indie bands; I don't get this style of having bad singers as a staple of good indie music.

It's a classic tune to people with solid taste.

Solid 4/5. I would classify myself as one of the younger posters on the board... but that shite a wild 10 minute ride.

4/5 I just added this band to my spotify. Nice find! I honestly thought this song would be a confident 5/5 when it started, but the problem is that it never hit the next level at any point. The sound is great as is the orchestration, but it was begging for that crescendo moment that never did come.

I dig The Sword. If you and your Viking buddies were on the way to rape and pillage the next town over, you would put this on and spark one up for the ride. 4.5/5 stars.

This is a band I discovered yesterday and ordered their debut cd after listening to one song. A lovely Bonny lass for a singer.

2/5. Definitely not my style of music at all. And I’m not big on the plague mask/pyrotechnics/goth metal thing either but that’s just me. She’s pretty though and the doctors have skills I suppose.
