Entwistle was great and a multi- instrumentalist.

It’s all about finding the groove and staying in the pocket, not showing off.

McCartney brings the lulz.
I think he gets grouped in there because he played for one of the most legendary bands on the planet and he did it while singing. Which is hard as shite to begin with. I find it impossible to sing and play bass at the same time. He was just incredibly talented. So he gets lumped in sometimes. But he did what he was supposed to do. Stay on time and not clutter up the song.

FWIW - McCartney was almost certainly the best bass player in The Beatles. And the best pianist, drummer, singer, lyricist and guitar player.
Out of the "One Man Bands" - it's McCartney, Fogerty and Winwood, with everyone else vying for fourth. (Although, Lindsay Buckingham did play everything on Holiday Road. True story.)

Zach Smith from Pinback is arguably the most underrated white bassist alive

can still take lessons from Carrol Kaye via Skype
Word of warning going in if you did decide to look into lessons from her. I have read about a lot of folks that have done this. She can be very impatient and mean. She does not want to deal with beginners and really just wants to teach jazz. I used to read some of her posts on Facebook and she really does come off as an arrogant bitch.
