Say it with me together: fertilizer.

On Piano
On Guitar - All Along the Watchtower
At the ripe ol' age of 17.

FTR, EVH, Yuja Wang, SRV,
Leonard Bernstein, Matteo Mancuso, et al were/are better as well.

Bad arse rendition of this tune Honky Tonk Woman cover!

No one will ever be as versatile as this dude. So many types of music he mastered. R and B, Soul, Funk, Jazz, and Rock.

Have always been partial to his heavy rock influence stuff. The goat.

Prince starts giving lessons at 3:25. Love how he casually tosses his guitar and walks off stage at the end.

Holy frick. This bullshite, again.

It’s Iike some of y’all have never seen a truly good guitarist play a solo before.

Was he a talented musician? Yes.

Was he a talented showman? Of course.

Was he a great guitarist as judged from his body of work? Absolutely not.

Thank you.

If someone enjoys his music, then listen all you want. Music is awesome. But if someone comes to a music board spouting off that Prince is some GOAT, then they ought to expect push back.

I'd much rather be scorned for challenging their inflated claims than to listen to his stuff. There's just so much better music and so many better musicians I can listen to.

Agreed

Massively overrated

What exactly was overrated about him? The fact that starting at 17 he wrote all his own music? Performed all the music himself? Produced it himself? Or was it the fact that after he was signed to the largest first time album deal by Warner Brothers, they asked Ted Templeman (yes, that Ted Templeman) to go into the studio with him in order to make sure Prince could actually do all these things by himself....only to have Templeman report back....the only thing the kid needs is an engineer.

Maybe it's the fact that so many other artists such as Stevie Nicks, The Time, Sheila E, Chaka Khan, Sheena Easton, The Bangles, Art of Noise, Patti Labelle, Sinead O' Connor, Alicia Keys and others recorded his music.

Lastly, here's a list of guys who don't agree with your terrible take on Prince, EVH, Billy Gibbons, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Tom Petty, Brian May, Slash, The Edge, Frank Zappa, Steve Cropper, Vernon Reid, Jack White and the list goes on and on from greats who are on record praising Prince as a guitarist and musician.

Sit down.

That there are people on here proclaiming him as the GOAT. For example - see above

quote:

He was the most talented POPULAR musician of all time, and it isn't even close.

Yes, that is subjective to a degree, but I believe most of the people that disagree with that were put off by his eccentricity.

This is unhinged.

Perhaps you can cite your sources. FTR, EVH and Prince were contemporaries. I've never seen where EVH admired Prince's music. EVH - How He Was Treated and His Favorite Guitarist.

You can listen to some of the other musicians linked above but I'll ask: does anyone really think Prince was as accomplished on keyboards or on guitar as Shawn Lane?

I'm on board with this - it's amazing the level of lead guitar play that blows the average person away.

I enjoyed that solo. Not saying Prince is bad and that he is not talented, certainly a good musician and songwriter...

But every 17yo on Broadway in Nashville can play circles around that. So can most 40 something dad rockers that have been playing guitar for over ten years.

Debate all you want about "feel" and songwriting, what sounds good and doesn't, but that is tiers below what the best guitarists can do from a difficulty standpoint. That solo was nothing special on a pure technique standpoint even in the blues genre.

I think it's quite arguable. McCartney for sure is up there - I even give him the easy edge.

Prince's weakness, IMO, was songwriting. At the end of the day, I just don't enjoy his complete catalogue hardly at all. Sure, there's 10 or so songs he wrote that I think are pretty great. Not a single one even close to as good as McCartney's best, say, 50 songs. McCartney is CLEARLY a better bass and keyboard player. And I think probably as good on guitar.

I'm inclined to put Lennon up there as well, but I'll refrain just because I don't feel like arguing that one.

Agreed.

I just picked Shawn Lane as an example. If someone were to juxtapose some of his work with Prince's, it would be readily evident that Shawn Lane is in another stratosphere.

Prince was an entertainer par excellence. Props to him. He played a variety of instruments. More props. He was very popular. Keep the props coming.

But when his fans start labeling him as a GOAT musician on any instrument, it's laughable.

is shawn lane even marginally as popular as Prince?

I'd do some unforgivable things for pop music to be putting out records as good as Prince, 1999, purple rain and sign of o times

prince was an underrated instrumental musician but only because 99% of his fans only remember/appreciate him as a singer/songwriter (very similarly to David Bowie). He was generationally talented at creating music. That’s enough
