For a second there I thought he was trying to buy Augusta National.

I didn't realize rap was THAT lucrative.

Motley Crue got their masters from Electra in the late 90's but had to sign an NDA as to how they did it

Acquiring their masters is most of the reason they had a resurgence in popularity and started making money hand over fist.

They've also done an amazing job managing their brand over the years. They have turned down a lot of stuff, putting one of their songs in Rock of Ages is one that comes to mind.

I heard Nikki talk about this one time and he said he wanted the Motley Crue name to be more associated with Van Halen and Metallica than with like Poison and The Scorpions like they had been in the 80's. When you talk about Motley Crue now most would say they are as big or bigger than a Def Leppard or Bon Jovi, even though at the time all these bands were at their peak Motley wasn't in the same class as those two bands at all. Pretty amazing.

Nikki is a good business man and the band makes good decisions as a group. Like you said, they avoided becoming an '80s nostalgia act and that was by design.

He shouldn't have signed the contract if he wanted to retain control of his music.

Mr. NBA Youngblood aside, that’s almost impossible to do if you want to get big time distribution. The system is set up to put the musician at an ownership disadvantage.

But I can also see the business side of it. Musicians and bands can be flaky as hell. Several flame out or end up locked up, drugged out, etc. I would want some kind of guarantee that I won’t get fricked too.

It’s a hard line to find where musicians still maintain ownership of their master tapes but music companies don’t feel they’re going to get fricked in distribution rights.
