Mr. NBA Youngblood aside, that’s almost impossible to do if you want to get big time distribution. The system is set up to put the musician at an ownership disadvantage. But I can also see the business side of it. Musicians and bands can be flaky as hell. Several flame out or end up locked up, drugged out, etc. I would want some kind of guarantee that I won’t get fricked too. It’s a hard line to find where musicians still maintain ownership of their master tapes but music companies don’t feel they’re going to get fricked in distribution rights.
The music industry has changed a lot, you don't necessarily need to sign a deal with the devil to reach your audience nowadays. He's too new to the game to be demanding his masters get returned to him. That's something he would need to address after this contract is finished. Artists with longevity usually get back greater control later on.

5 albums for 2 million? That seems like a low ball price, do they get royalties from their songs also?

For a second there I thought he was trying to buy Augusta National.
I'm disappointed that this isn't what this thread is about.
I'd love to see the NBA Youngboy Augusta Open and the 21 Savage British Open. It would add some flavor to an otherwise boring sport.

If a label paid for the recording, which is what a label is for, why the hell would they give away the masters?
That's like a contractor building a house for you, then giving it to you. If you get big enough, that you pretty much own the label, then you can get your masters.
