I can dislike the music but take a band seriously. So, I see this as a different question. Bands that overuse a gimmick are ones I struggle to take seriously. Like Kiss and 80s hair and makeup bands. Though, I like Detroit Rock City.

There are genres I dismiss, such as rap and bro country, where the talent just isn't there.

Y'all are some judgmental fricks up in this thread.

In my younger days I was very judgey about what music someone listened to, but as I've gotten older my tastes have broadened quite a lot and now I listen to some of that same music myself. But there are still some groups/genres which will make me judge you:

Ace of Base and/or the Spice Girls - This is just garbage music and if you say you like it I will assume, correctly, that you have no actual musical taste at all.

Pearl Jam - For the life of me I cannot get the appeal of this band. I admit there are a handful of individual songs of theirs that I like, but the overall catalog is boring and... just boring, that's really the best word for it. This band bores me and if you are a huge fan I will assume that you are boring, too.

Jam bands - Again, I just do not get the appeal. The few songs by jam bands that I do like tend to be the same ones that hardcore fans of those bands describe as their weakest tracks, probably because they have actual song structure and aren't just 30 minutes of dirty hippies noodling around on their instruments. If you tell me you are a big jam band fan I will assume that you are unemployed, haven't showered in days, and are probably living out the back of a Volkswagen van down by the river.

Came to post this. I really liked them at one time, but I completely disagree with their politics. Even more important is that they are complete hypocrites about it.

“etc” implies - at least to me - that you were listing artists with a common thread. You basically listed 5 considerably different groups. So, I don’t get what you’re saying with “etc”.

Also KISS is the only one I completely agree with. I’ve never understood the ELO hate, but it seems to exist on this board.

Is this basically a list of popular acts that you aren’t sure why they are popular?

I’d say #1 on my list is Bruno Mars. I have no idea how the blandest of bland acts/sound got so much radio air play. IMO this guy sucks.

He’s dead now, but the biggest “most commercial success least amount of actual talent” is Jimmy Buffet. This guy was a karaoke singer at best. I barf that he created such a following.

I can’t stand the music, but I recognize the talent. It’s just not for me.

I can't take any artist seriously that doesn't write (most) of their own music and play their own instruments.

If you are just a front that sings into a microphone while all the songs are written and instruments played for you, I will not listen to you.

He was a hell of a songwriter, though, and he staked out territory that no one else was even attempting to explore with his "nautical redneck sort-of-country-but-not-really" approach. Either he was the Tom Petty of country music, or Tom Petty was the Jimmy Buffet of rock. Everyone that came after them in their respective genres claims them as an influence, but no one actually sounds like them.

yes, George Strait. Although he relied on Dean Dillon primarily so you could call that a songwriting “partnership” if you wanted to be charitable to the performer. But, he rarely wrote any original lyrics and it’s questionable whether he even wrote any of the music especially during his hitmaking peak.

I don’t consider strait one of the “greats” of country music any more than I do any of the current mouthpieces of the modern charts for that reason…he didn’t contribute original songs to the songbook

Exactly. Tim Commerford's signature bass runs $3300-$3600 retail. Tom Morello's signature strat runs $1700-2300. Very "for the people."

Meanwhile, Tom Araya's (Slayer) signature bass runs like $700. He did a rig rundown video and said, paraphrasing, "if some likes me enough to want to play my bass, he should be able to afford it mowing lawns." But he's the a-hole, right?

I’m assuming you think this because of margaritaville. While not a flashy guitar player at all he was a great partner to his band and a really good songwriter. Yes most of it was in the “white dude going to a tropical island” vein, but he had good songs outside of his radio hits.
