Problem is, I don't really like Blues, or really any jazz with vocals. I like jazz that feels like a wild showcase of what is possible with musical instruments. What sub genre matches best with these ideas? Smooth? Contemporary? Upbeat? All the music apps seem to just bring me back to Kenny G. Any artists or playlist that I should check out would be greatly appreciated.

I know it sounds cool to be a classical jazz guy, but I am just not into it. But, I am always listening to Smooth Jazz channel 444 on Comcast or Watercolors channel 66 on SiriusXM. Check out Dave Koz, Boney James, Paul Hardcastle, Chris Botti, Fourplay, Bob James, Four80East, and former athletes Bernie Williams and Wayman Tisdale, to name a few.

Could you please be more specific about what you mean by that?

Some great recommendations on this thread so far.

You could start out with these LP's:

Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Bill Evans - At the Village Vanguard (Evans graduated from SLU and is buried in BR)

Once you find a sound you like, look at the players who are on your favorite albums. They all put out their own records and so on and so forth. Once you get into the classics, you will find the guys who make the classics great.

Ornette Coleman is one of my favorites, his Free Jazz stuff is mind blowing. A few more great players to add to the list: Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Eric Dolphy, Cecil Taylor, and Sonny Rollins.

What kind of jazz would you call this?

Scene from jazz club in Bullitt

I don't know anything about jazz but this is great.

Lalo Schifrin wrote some great movie scores.
