The only reason I know this is because my friend played in the band and I saw a couple of their shows, but the Mighty Mighty Bosstones had a guy that just danced like an idiot all night. No playing, no vocals, just spaz dancing.

One of my all time favorite bands. Pretty cool that you know one of them. Their new album is good. They were a fun little different sound in the Ska movement. I still listen to them on a regular basis. When I was learning to play they were fun to throw in the headphones and jam with.

Not many play such a simplistic style that literally any decent drummer can mimic it. Less complicated than Def Leopard but he had both arms.

FWIW, he's their manager... and his dancing rules

One guy that comes to mind is Joel Gion of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Apart from a few years, he's been in the band all along...playing tambourine. Wonder how much clout he has at band meetings...

I don't hate the Bosstones.. They hate each other

I didn't know about a new album, it's not my thing, but I talk to Kevin from time to time

It's a paycheck thing for him, and probably the rest of them

I lived with him in Brooklyn for a while when he owned and operated a really cool studio on 30th street in Manhattan for several years

We made some really cool music there

Or maybe, you see an ad for a once-legendary band coming to town, and after some due diligence, you learn that the only "core" member left is someone no one ever gave a crap about?

Michael Stipe would be a better answer than Peter Buck, see Hindu Love Gods as evidence.

I remember a few albums after REM signed the massive WB record deal "free peter buck" t shirts started popping up here and there on members of local bands lol

Buck was largely responsible for the jangly, alt country sound that put them and athens on the map

If you said Tommy Thayer, I might've agreed. Impersonating Ace Frehley for 15+ years, and had been waiting in the wings behind the scenes since the late 80's. I would've said Eric Singer too, but at least he appears on a few albums playing the role of himself...

While I love Dire Straits, John Illsley managed not to get fired by Mark Knopfler for the band's entire tenure. He's certainly a solid player, so let me get that part out of the way, before the downvotes start raining, lol... but out of everyone who'd appeared in the band, he probably had the least amount of musical personality IMO.

Nah. I've heard plenty of credible drummers praise Phil Rudd for his ability to nail it in the pocket, and AC/DC's other drummers weren't/aren't quite able to pull it off like he did, despite how simple it may sound.
