If you listen to JI's solo albums, the musicianship is very good. Lyrics and vocals not so much, but the playing is excellent.

Not necessarily a band per se, but to add in a musical group, I would definitely say Otis Williams from the Temptations. He is a founding member of the group, and apparently the group still exist with Otis and a bunch of randoms.
Point is, the group has had some amazing vocalists. Multiple lead singers through different eras. That has never been Otis, he has been stuck in the background his entire career. Quite frankly after hearing him lead a song, he just is not a very good singer. At all.
