Nirvana's Career Trajectory

What would have become of Nirvana had Kurt Cobain found a way to keep his demons checked and lived beyond April 1994?
Their career trajectory is an interesting one in that it exemplifies the journey many bands take over a long span, but in only four years. "Bleach" (1989) was ragged and barely produced, "Nevermind" (1991) was polished and a commercial hit, and "In Utero" (1993) was challenging and rough, a return to their roots.
It took Metallica, for example, over thirty years to complete that career arc. By that measure, I can't imagine Cobain and Nirvana had much left in the tank creatively after 1994. Would they have found their way back into the underground and become just another band, far removed from their status and Generation X's answer to The Beatles?

Cobain said not long before his death that he was getting bored with their sound and had started playing around with a lot of effects pedals. Whatever their next album would have been, it would most likely have been a lot different than what people expected from them.

Kurt would have put out a solo album or two of acoustic type stuff and Grohl would have done Foo Fighters as a side project. Nirvana would have gone the way of Pearl Jam, put out an average to slightly above average album every 5-7 years while still touring occasionally and being one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

I think more Soundgarden type path. They have broke up when Grohl started Foo Fighters. Novaselic has gotten into politics I believe and all sorts of stuff.
Like Soundgarden, maybe they get together for reunion tours 15 years later.
Cobain WAS an interesting songwriter. Maybe he had more to say with solo projects and collaborations. Maybe he mellows in middle age and if he’s not a junkie maybe he doesn’t have that frick the world attitude anymore.

I knew that was coming. I have my suspicions, too.

I remember about 15 years ago, Spin magazine did a fictional history of Nirvana. I think they had Dave, Krist and Pat Smear forming Foo Fighters and Kurt making solo albums between rehab stints and suicide attempts. (And him doing a turn as a guitarist with the Jesus Lizard until the press got wise to it) Sadly, that sounds about right.

kurt just couldn't get over his addiction and had courtney love fighting with him every day and stressing him out.
If he got off drugs, would the art have suffered? I think it probably would have.

He was working on some stuff with Michael Stipe when he died.

I’d submit that if Cobain was not suicidal, they would have not had the success they enjoyed. Perhaps this was their only arc possible.

Yes, I’ve heard Michael Stipe say that they were set to work together, a more mellow sound that would’ve been more akin to REM’s sound. Kurt was ready to evolve. I think we would’ve heard a vibe closer to what they did on Unplugged. Kurt was a big fan of a lot of deeper, less hard music, REM, The Beatles, The Meat Puppets, Lead Belly. Dave Grohl has shown a willingness to evolve and stick around and Kurt was already shifting his tastes. I think Nirvana as a group would keep putting out good tunes without a focus on making popular music.

They would have went more synth like Radiohead

I think they would have moved in a more psychedelic direction much like the Beatles did later in their short career.

I'm going to guess he would have written a few songs with slow to mid-tempo verses and a really loud and fast chorus.

Does his affiliation have anything to do with why Love and Stipe hate each other?
