It appears to me that the song is about the concert experience for the band and the fans.

Seen Metallica a few times and don't really need to again

However, these 2 night shows with 2 completely different sets are very appealing to me especially with "Pantera" and INK opening (also props to them for getting this opener gig shows how far they've come just in the past year)

Is anybody else hesitant to try and get tickets for some of these shows all the way in 2024? Seems risky that's a lot of time

Unless tomorrow's pre-sale is another disaster, I plan on buying tickets to the Arlington shows.
My first "Metallica" concert was in the old Texas Stadium in July 2000. Hetfield missed the show due to an injury. A month later I attended both make-up concerts.

I just listened to the new track, and I'm underwhelmed. It seems Metallica are more than willing to coast on their reputations, now. Hearing a new Metallica song for the first time used to be an amazing experience. Think back to the releases of "One," "Enter Sandman," "The Memory Remains," or even "Until it Sleeps." There were surprises in store and risks taken. Innovations, for better or worse. Tracks like "Lux Eterna" do little to excite me; it's paint-by-numbers, "back to their roots" thrash. I long for Metallica to shake things up like they did in the '90s, but sadly, this is what we'll get for the rest of their career. Metallica are playing it safe, which is something they knocked other bands for throughout the "Load" era.

Maybe it's just me growing older and dealing with children and a world of responsibilities, too. New Metallica songs don't do much for me, anymore.

I'd safely assume they are playing most if not all of the Danny Wimmer festivals

As for the new album's title and cover art, both are silly and uninspiring. "72 Seasons" may bump "St. Anger" as both Metallica's worst album title and cover art, ever.

The thought of "72 seasons" being an artsier way to say "18 years" feels overthought and dumb, at the same time. It reeks of the band trying to think deeper, which is seldom beneficial with multi-millionaires with too much time on their hands.

The scene on the album cover appears to be lifted from a Billie Eilish record, perhaps by design to capture a new crop of fans who discovered Metallica via "Stranger Things." I never dreamed I'd see items as random as dumbbells, a tricycle, and a teddy bear on a Metallica album cover, but there they are. And boy, is it yellow, huh?

And this is the damned if you do/damned if you don't issue bands find themselves in after being around for decades. If they do things similar to their roots, half the fans say they are just repeating themselves, "coasting". If they do something new, follow their muse, etc, the other half complain it isn't MoP or AJFA again. A significant number of fans still hate the Black Album, because "they sold out". Similarly with Load and Reload. And don't even mention Lulu.

At some point it is best for bands to do what they feel, be it new, retreads, etc. Some fans will love it, some fans won't.

It's an interesting subject, for certain. I'd go easier on Metallica for becoming a nostalgia act if only they'd not railed against such things so much in interviews throughout the "Load" era.

I believe this supposed "return to their roots" is more of a business decision designed to make cash registers ring than some bout of divine musical inspiration.

I don't feel Metallica have made the music they want to make as true artists since the "Load" records. What we've heard since then is poorly misguided efforts or plain ol' fan service.

It's wild to see an act that could do no wrong across its first four albums go so awry in the last twenty years.

As an aside, did anyone else think for a moment that "72 Seasons" meant 72 tracks on the album? This is the one band I wouldn't put it past to do so...

This exactly. I think it really has to do with James losing his edge and turning into Santa Claus. Seeing him in the studio during the making of those last 2 albums, playing some generic riff a 12 year old would come up with and saying "hell yeah dude that's badass", gives me no hope for any future Metallica music

You nailed it, man.
It makes me sad to know that my favorite band’s music doesn’t move me, anymore. I can’t tell you how pumped I used to get over new Metallica tunes…

Lars still sucks. He works for Metallica though. Just think if Metallica would've had a drummer like Vinnie Paul.....

This seems crazy to me. Death Magnetic was incredible, no matter the motivation.

I'm in the queue right now trying to buy the highest VIP package for the Los Angeles show. It includes a guaranteed meeting with at least 2 and members. I'm curious if Hetfield is ever one of the two.

I'm a legacy member from being in the club years ago and peeked at some of the tickets. In dallas, four great lower level 50 yard line (stage is a circle) seats comes in at $2k after $400 in fees. A bit high, but it is for 2 nights/shows. Thats just the seats, but all the different VIP packages go up from there. Prices suck for what you actually get.

As far as meet and greets it will be Lars and Robert with sometimes Kirk. James doesn't like them and has rarely done them.

I have heard he doesn't do them anymore. He used to do them all the time.

Just bought my tickets for the St Louis shows in November 2023. Lower bowl at mid stage/50-yard line.

Also went ahead and reserved a room at the Embassy Suites a block away.

I was able to get 2 of the Nothing Else Matters. It's almost a year away, so who knows. Still, the production tour sounds cool.

quote:

One (1) backstage meet & greet experience with two members of the band, which includes a photo taken by the tour photographer, and a group conversation with members of the band* (band members will vary show-to-show)
One (1) production tour led by a Metallica crew member and on-stage group photo**
One (1) ticket to the Snake Pit, an exclusive standing section located in the middle of the stage, for BOTH shows in the same city
Party with other Metallica fans BOTH nights at the official "Black Box" pre-show lounge, which includes three (3) complimentary beverages, as well as appetizers and bar snacks
Two (2) limited edition, show-specific posters***
One (1) autographed setlist featuring all of the songs played at both shows***
One (1) commemorative city-specific concert ticket***
One (1) limited edition Metallica merchandise item***
One (1) MP3 download of the live audio from both shows***
Express lane at a designated merchandise stand
On-site perks such as priority check-in, dedicated support staff, and a fast-track lane into the venue

The production tour sounds cool. Also, to be clear, it covers 2 shows at which they are playing different set lists.

Seems crazy to me that any of them would agree to do it. Must be so brutal.
