My son is into an indie explorative phase, he loves Modest Mouse and things like that. One evening maybe a year or two ago we were cooking and he played King of Carrot Flowers out of the blue which made me proud (heck he was maybe 13 at the time) and I told him they formed in Ruston which he thought was really cool. He’d been listening to Aeroplane Over the Sea and I still hear him play it pretty regularly so for Xmas I think I’m getting him a vinyl of it as a stocking stuffer.
I enjoy them and the nautical Victorian-esque imagery and backdrop their music seems to paint. Any other fans? And any of you know them growing up in Ruston?

In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of my favorite albums ever. Possible my absolute favorite. I've never heard anything quite like it. The music and lyrics create such a strange, unique and beautiful listen. I can see why it would be too much for a lot of people though. Singing saws, horns galore, a loose concept album about Anne Frank's diary and even some semen stained mountaintops.
This summer I actually read a book on the album that was part of the 33 1/3 series. I'd recommend it to any fans. It's only like 100 pages.
On the Avery Island and some of their songs that aren't on a proper album are really great too. Little Birds is one of the more chilling songs I've ever heard.

Your kid is going to be picked on...a lot

Lol nah he’s got the cool kid thing down. In gifted and listens to indie but his date to homecoming was a cheerleader. And can cook like a pro (seriously is better than most adults) and is learning to play guitar.

Good, because the gifted teenagers who were into stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel were definitely considered the weird kids when I was in school. He’ll need all the help he can get, and guitar and cooking skills are a great card to play. Playing guitar is a good strategy in hs. I wish I had started learning prior to senior year. That guitar playing paid off big time in college.

I love starting a Google Play station with King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1.

I only got into them about 10 years ago but this is a very good album.

They came through Dallas 4 or 5 years ago and played that album in its entirety.

Great band, great record. They played a couple of nights at the Varsity a few years back...place was PACKED!!!
I'm sure he'd love anything that you get him from them

I think it was 2014. The night before LSU played Alabama. Chimes and Varsity were both packed. I remember waiting for like an hour for a table at Chimes beforehand and then waiting in a line stretching to State Street waiting for doors to open.
Also saw them at Civic Theatre earlier that year.

Huge fan. I'll still be listening to them in 30 years.

One of my favorite bands and it's sad that they never went on to make more music other than the 2 albums and a couple EPs. In The Aeroplane is a timeless album.
I never got to see the full band play unfortunately, but I did get to see Jeff Mangum on his solo tour not long before the full band did their tour. It was a great show and one I honestly never thought I'd see.
If you haven't ever listened to it, I highly recommend the live recording in '97 of Jeff (solo) at Jittery Joe's in Athens, GA - LINK. The audio isn't the best quality but it's a great show that was performed before Aeroplane was released, so you hear some alternate versions of some of those songs, plus a few covers. I think they officially released it as I had bought a copy about 15 years ago.

For those not familiar with this band, check out the sheer beauty and haunting quality of King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1:
quote:
When you were young
You were the king of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet
And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder
And dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for
And this is the room
One afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no one dares to go
And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try

I caught that tour, but the sound wasn't the best IMO...
'98 at the Mermaid for the Aeroplane tour... that was amazing... and then they faded away..

one of my favorite bands of the last 25 years

My cousin is Robert Schneider who produced their stuff and was a big part of the elephant 6.
My first CDs as a kid were apples in stereo and neutral milk hotel.
Robert just donated a ton of stuff to the university of Georgia archives from all of the bands he worked with over the years. He is a math professor there now.

The only girl I've ever loved
Was born with roses in her eyes
But then they buried her alive
One evening in 1945
With just her sister at her side
And only weeks before the guns
All came and rained on everyone
Now she's a little boy in Spain
Playing pianos filled with flames
On empty rings around the sun
I'll sing to say my dream has come
But now we must pack up every piece
Of the life we used to love
Just to keep ourselves
At least enough to carry on

But then they buried her alive
One evening in 1945
With just her sister at her side
And only weeks before the guns

That is a legit CSB. Do you know Robert well? Ever get to meet any of the people in the E6 bands?

unfortunately we never hung out a whole lot due to our age gap and geography. But he is legitimately the nicest person I have ever been around in my life.
I met some of the apples in stereo folks when they played a show at centenary. I was only like 8 then though.

Don’t want to pry but how old were you then? New Magnetic Wonder is an incredible album.
