Every now and then when I see musicians interviewed, I hear it mentioned that their father was a preacher. I can only think of a few, but bet there are more than people realize.

Here is one - Alice Cooper

off the top of my head:

Aretha Franklin
Marvin Gaye I think
Sam Cooke -- Sam was born in the MS Delta. His father took the family to Chicago by hitch hiking; he got food by holding impromptu revival services along the way, and asking for donations

I'm sure a number of other soul singers

If I would have had mp3s, streaming or just an easily accessible way of listening to hard to find, out of print, obscure music at any time like assholes today do..I wouldn't have had to re-buy the same albums multiple times, and I'd have had so much more pot + instruments instead.

Makes perfect sense if you consider church is the very first hands-on music exposure for many youth, particularly in impoverished areas where school music programs are non-existent or lackluster, and/or families can't afford to buy children musical instruments. We couldn't count how many timeless voices in American music history got their start and honed their craft in their church choir. And start polling jazz and blues keys players throughout history ... you will frequently hear their church's piano or organ was their first keyboard.

Metallica frontman/guitarist James Hetfield’s parents were ardent followers of the Christian Science religion. He says he never took medicine for so much as a headache until adulthood.

Otis Redding was born in Dawson, Georgia, the fourth of six children, and the first son of Otis Redding Sr. and Fannie Roseman. Redding Sr. was a sharecropper and then worked at Robins Air Force Base, near Macon, and occasionally preached in local churches.
