Apples and oranges, and also a pretty hard question for me
Radiohead has a bigger catalog, and were probably more consistent
But The Queen is Dead is better than any album Radiohead came out with, OK Computer included
I dunno, probably Radiohead I guess

Not really in the sense that both were the biggest British alternative act of their respective generation.
The Smiths do have one of the top albums of the '80s in The Queen Is Dead and perhaps the best collection of b-sides outside of a certain '60s group from Liverpool. Both are obviously great groups, but for me it is Radiohead and it isn't even close.
Thinking about it now, I feel like the opening title track of The Queen Is Dead is vastly underrated. It seems that "I Know It's Over" , "Cemetery Gates" , and especially "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" are always heaped with praise but the title track is easily my favorite on the LP.

Hmmm... I'd argue The Cure were bigger than The Smiths... Over the span of The Smith's lifetime... But point taken..

Put it this way, the Cure is playing Voodoo Fest this year.
If The Smiths could possibly have the biggest reunion of any band with all surviving members. I know Coachella offered them an absurd amount of money but Morrisey refused because they served meat at the festival (fricking idiot

The Cure were bigger (didn't say better), Heady... The fact that the smiths haven't played together in 25 years... Of course that would be a more intriguing, in demand show...
ABBA were offered 1 billion dollars for a reunion, doesn't mean shite...
All I'm saying is that if you are going to be my quasi unofficial voice, please portray my formative music years accurately... Or for here on after be referred to as The Rolling Stone Magazine of the Music board...
Edit: and of course, I'm only talking "alternative" music here... There were many bigger British bands during this era... The likes of Duran Duran, etc...

I have always seen The Smiths being critically acclaimed. The Cure not so much.

In their prime The Smiths. For longevity Radiohead. Both are great bands.

I loved every album by The Smiths. Later/newer Radiohead albums, not so much. The Smiths by 2 lengths IMHO.
