I’m going with Billy Gibbons. For the style I most admire, he has it all. his phrasing and groove are just so tasty.
I think other answers that would be hard to argue are: Jimi, Jeff Beck, knopfler, david Gilmore
Ones that still think could be correct but easier to argue: Page, Keith Richards (hitmaking ability speaks for itself) EVH
Some very honorable mentions: Mike Campbell, Lindsey buckingham, Joe Walsh, Nile Rogers, Pete Townsend, Clapton, Frusciante, Steve Cropper
Some country guys could definitely be in the conversation
The combination of skynard, eagles and the allman brothers make it hard to isolate a “greatest” but everyone that has played in those bands is top notch
Some newer guys like Billy Strings and Derrick Trucks that deserve mention. Dan Auerbach and to a lesser extent Jack White.
Things I consider that could effect answer: technical skill, range in style, groove/rhythm, hit making ability, use of physical effects (tapping, slurring, sliding, etc) and signal effects.

David Gilmore. Can't believe he wasn't mentioned before page 2.

I remember reading a concert review for the Pretenders in the early 80s and the writer described his guitar playing as sounding like a "Tyranasarus Rex howling from the right side of the stage". The guy was really good.

Seems to be a small Honeyman-Scott fan club on the music board!

Like Elliot Easton, he was great at playing exactly what the song needed

Not sure I can narrow down one greatest.
But if I was stuck on a desert island and could only listen to 3 guitars forever
David Gilmour
Adam Jones
John Frusciante
Hetfield/ Hammett combo fights hard to make that list.

Yes to James Honeyman Scott.
frick that bastard Pete Farndon (great bassist) for introducing him to drugs
both died within a year of one another, can only imagine what Pretenders could have accomplished with both of them has they lived longer
