I know this topic comes up semi-regularly, but thought it would be worth revisiting. The two that first come to my mind are Jerry Jeff Walker and Dwight Yoakam. Both seem to get overlooked pretty regularly in the all-time great country musicians discussions.

JJW is a country legend though...

DY is the real deal... it was refreshing when he came on the scene during the pop country of the 80s... but he cut his teeth in L.A. alongside X, The Blasters and Los Lobos... so, he's always had credibility in the RnR world..

A legend? Yes. Does he still seem to be commonly overlooked in these discussions? Yes.

Dwight was one of the very best parts 90's country, and as mentioned above - along with Lyle, K.D. & the Mavericks also had west coast street cred.

Really came to post Steve Earle, he hardly ever gets mentioned but I can hear his influence with bands like Aquarium.

I feel like Steve Earle gets left out largely because he isn't considered to be a pure country musician. I agree with you though

Wade Bowen. I love his voice and he is a sweet pea.

If anyone remembers David Ball, he had a great country voice.

I used to burn up Riding With Private Malone when I was in middle school. Paycheck is a good one too. Watched an interview with him and Merle earlier today where they were telling stories about their drug fueled exploits

Vince Gill is an underrated guitar player. He's obviously a great singer and his singing ability overshadows his playing.

Hearing him sing Go Rest High On That Mountain in the Ryman is possibly the single best song I've ever heard live

Gary P. Nunn--Everyone knows "Home with the armadillo" from JJW's record, but he has alot of good songs that he did with his own band as well. A really great live version of Public Domain on a live album with Junior Brown playing in his band, as well as several other good songs (the last thing I needed, the first thing this morning)
