Modern metal bands, etc...

Lately the stress of my life has driven me more towards heavier music (not screamo or death metal). It's so refreshing hearing music that isn't generic poppy stuff with overplayed lyrics.
Currently diving deep into Metallica. Any other recommendations for current and active metal bands that aren't so mainstream?

Any particular genre of metal or do you just want some popular modern bands?

Gojira is very underrated

I got one for ya. Astronoid. This album has been described as 'Dream Thrash'. It's like thrash/black metal/shoegaze but with super harmonic vocals. So almost poppy, in a sense. I've been obsessed with this album for a while. Give it a chance.

I strongly suggest you explore John Bush-era Anthrax, especially the “Sound of White Noise” album. It’s all killer, no filler; Bush is a great vocalist. Mean guitar riffs abound.

Nothing too screamy is all. I really do enjoy Metallica but I know they are the face of the genre so I have to dive deeper for due dilligence.

Try Mark Tremonti's solo stuff.
Alter Bridge is the more mainstream version but Tremonti is a lot more metal.

Sempiternal from Bring Me The Horizon is a nice blend of polished/hard rock music if you hadn’t heard that particular album, though they’re pretty mainstream at this point.
