Agree. Prince was the shite when I was in high school. Introduced a French exchange student to him and blew his mind. I might be responsible for introducing Prince to Europe.

Michael Jackson at the time.

Prince with the benefit of hindsight.

This is probably true. From 80' to 86' or so Michael Jackson was somewhat comparable to Elvis or the Beatles, he was absolutely huge. Everyone tried to dress like him and imitate him. Price has been very good for a long time so I'd say it's debatable. Hard choice. It probably came down to Prince just doing his own thing and he was still that good.

Prince is a better musician Michael is a better entertainer and has the greater legacy and it's not even close.

If MJ has a better legacy than anyone I don't want to live on this planet anymore

I shead not a tear for either, but I respect their talent.

FWIW...I took Chris Farley's death harder than MJ and P.

But when it came to playing an instrument Jackson is not in the same universe.

This.

Prince played over 20 instruments and even wrote hit songs for other artists. I think they recently announced he had "thousands" of songs that he wrote that will never see the light of day.

If Tupac can release songs in the grave so can Prince

MJ may have claims for being the better performer and having greater influence. Although I'm not certain how good those claims are.

Prince dominates virtually everything else. He was a far superior musician and was more well-rounded artist than MJ.

One was a musician the other was a disco singer. Not even close.

Michael Jackson was much more than a decent singer. He focused more on entertaining the crowd, but to say he's just a decent singer is not accurate at all.

Jackson 5 Michael Jackson had one of the purest singing voices ever. It's not like he became popular as an 11 year old b/c he was a dancer. His voice was overwhelming and unbelievable. "I'll be there", "Ben", and "Got to be there" sung by an 11 year old Jackson, has the same power you'd hear from Diana Ross or Mariah Carey.

His voice is what made him a nation wide sensation at first. His dancing and ability to entertain the crowd is what turned him into the King of Pop.

And Thriller.

Prince had a great sense of humor. He said Michael Jackson named his album Bad because there wasn't enough room for Pathetic.

Watching that last ditch effort to start a new tour before his death is embarrassing. Then, after he died, watching his brothers still try to generate momentum for his comeback..

I agree, Prince is arguably the greatest rock musician who ever lived and ever will live with the direction current popular music is headed. He's been greatly underrated for his innovations sonically and overall songs. I'd personally rank him in a threeway tie with The Beatles and Michael Jackson all-time but have enough reservations about him that preclude me from solely putting him at the top spot(mainly the fact that he put these overlong, uninteresting soul ballads on his albums from 1980-88 excluding Purple Rain that completely zoned me out).

Plus, I feel Michael had the better voice than Prince. Prince's voice was more versatile, but Michael's was instantaneously recognizable and worked in his favor so much.

randybobandy, Hendrix and Prince are essentially their own continents in terms of legacy. It really never got better than these two and Michael in his prime.

With You on Prince's debut albums is one of the best soul ballads ever written. Do Me Baby on Controversy is one of the most sensual and provocative ballads ever written. International Lover on 1999 is another highly critically acclaimed ballad. Adore on Sign O The Times is another ballad on one of the most highly critically acclaimed albums in rock history.
To say that Prince's soul ballads are uninteresting displays very little knowledge of his body of work.

I never said all of his soul ballads were uninteresting. I liked Slow Love and The Beautiful Ones. Let me put it this way, if every Prince ballad was the length and vibe of The Beautiful Ones, Prince would obviously be the undisputed greatest artist of all-time instead of relegated to being below The Beatles, Michael Jackson, hell even The Rolling Stones.

I mean in terms of all the "greatest artists" lists publications compile from time to time.
