When Jimmy Page was assembling what would become the ultimate rock 'n roll band he wanted a front man who would personify sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. Suppose he had discovered Freddy Mercury instead of Robert Plant. What kind of band would Led Zeppelin have turned out to be?

I’m not a LZ fan and love Mercury but c’mon!

It would have been dreadful.

He'd have been a lot better off if he'd have found Jim Morrison.

I heard LZ when they released their first albums ...... all during my high school years. I instantly loved them and still do. THAT BEING SAID. I didn’t like Plant then, 20 years ago or now. I have no clue who would have been better - Roger Daltry maybe.

Page first asked some dude named Terry Reid who turned him down. Reid also turned down Deep Purple. He did not go on to stardom elsewhere.

Plant was the perfect fit for LZ.

I always thought that Janis Joplin's voice would have worked well with Zeppelin.

OP falsely led me to believe this was a thread about The WHO.

I think the common appreciation of blues and folk is what made Plant a perfect singer for Page, and Jones the perfect complementary musician. Bonzo of course laid it all down.

I’ve heard that at one of LZ’s early shows in a smaller venue, the PA system went out. Plant sang the entire show with no amplification, and everyone could hear him nonetheless. For anyone who’s ever done vocals in a rock band, you understand how incredible that is. No one could have replaced that.

I've seen this discussed in rock forums before, and often at that. I can just hear her belting out "The Lemon Song" or "Black Dog".

One of the guys from Milli Vinilli would have been just as good and original as Plant.

Plants writing?

I mean what were the percentages of lyrics written by each individual member? Honestly asking...

Very little. Almost everything they did was ripped off.

He asked Steve Marriott (who politely declined).

He then got a Marriott fanboy (Plant).
