Charisma: John (but it only came out after Yoko arrived on the scene).

John had charisma before then. At the Royal Variety performance in 63 Paul acted like a scared little kid and John was dropping jokes like “For our last number I’d like to ask your help. Would the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you’ll just rattle your jewelry.”

Lennon's only real advantage is that he did write smarter lyrics and his compositions were more complicated.

Lennon's work was edgier and more avant garde and really propelled the Beatles into new territory. Maca wrote great pop songs that had huge appeal. To have these two in the same band is mind blowing.

Paul in every way. I do not like anything about John.

I started reading The Last Days of John Lennon by James Patterson. Patterson jumps from the events surrounding Lennon's murder to Lennon's adolescence, starting just before he and Paul meet. Lennon was a messed up kid before his mother died, which certainly didn't help things. But all that angst certainly explains his music.

Deep, meaningful songwriting - Lennon
Everything else - McCartney

I think John is a massively overrated musician and hypocrite. Dude writes songs about peace and love and not caring about possessions and meanwhile beats the dog shite out of women and lives an absurdly lavish lifestyle in New York. He’s so full of shite, if he were alive today he’d be cancelled by his own kind.

Paul was more talented. He was also a much more competent person.

That said, most of my favorite beatles tunes are John's.

He was supposedly pretty Conservative the final years of his life, so you're probably right.

Disagree about him being overrated, though. He's one of the most important and influential songwriters of all time.

The only other people that I'd probably even put on his level would probably be Paul McCartney, Hank Williams, and Tom Jobim. Even though arguments could be made for plenty of others.

True, John was certainly the more vocal of the two. He was more like the court jester while Paul was charming in his shyness and strong vocals.

John

But both were great.

Paul was a bit more musically talented, but couldn't write close to what John did.

By the way, John had an amazing rock and roll voice.
