Pitchfork article

quote:

Some country icons who died this year were honored during the 2020 CMAs last night (including Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels, and Mac Davis), but three icons went unmentioned during the broadcast: John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver. For this reason, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires have announced that they’re returning their lifetime membership cards to the Country Music Association. “I doubt anybody will care, but we cared a lot about our heroes,” Isbell wrote.

CMA is allergic to actual country music.

Originally thought this was going to be connected to his new song with Barry Gibb, which is fantastic, and I was going to come in here swinging.

I agree with his gesture.

Does anyone know why those three weren't mentioned? Not trolling - honest question

I'm sure it has something to do with all three bucking the country music establishment to an extent.

There was no In Memoriam segment. They honored a few of the recently departed with covers of their songs and such, but many got not mention at all.

Saving Country Music has a piece about, including a Sturgill post where he was also pissed about Prine being unmentioned. LINK

The Masters just honored John Prine with a video to "I remember everything," with golf legends then and now. Apparently this is how they opened the first day.

It is pretty sad that the CMA couldn't squeeze out at least a combo segment on those lost in the past year. The Oscars even honors behind the scenes folks no one has heard of.

Tim Wilson nailed it

I really like his songs and albums but he is a huge fricking drama queen.

The Shires-Isbells are undefeated when it comes to virtue signaling.

(They do have a point this time tho)

Amazing they didn't honor Prine, but not really.

CMA is mostly about people who had hits on top 40 Country Radio, as artists. It's really more for the fans. It is definitely a popularity contest. Songwriting is a whole different thing.
