Is Randy Rhoads the greatest guitarist of all time?

Who would you put above him? Went into an Ozzy listening binge and my god the baw could shred. Such a damn shame he died so young guy was truly a master at his craft.

He’s definitely in my top 5. To think of all the music we missed because of his untimely death. 26 years old? Damn. Eddie Van Halen recorded VH 1 at 23. Mind blowing technique, tone, talent and composition. He’s tops for me.

Yes yes whatever you say

No, guitarist is a broad term, there are many great ones in many genres, maybe your question should be is the the greatest Rock/Shred guitarist?

While there are too many greats to name a greatest, Rhoads is one of them. Personally, it was fun and encouraging hearing popular music turn toward metal, and metal get faster and more thoughtful. I was bored with blues based and major key rock. It was a great time.

No, not even close. Very good, but is exponentially inflated on All-time lists just like every other guitarist who died young

I'm a huge Rhoads fan but no - even if he was going to be unquestionably the GOAT (which doesn't exist), his small body of work automatically disqualifies him
His improvisation, classical qualities, and musicality were amazing especially considering the time frame. He brought an extra element that many of the hair metal shredders of the 80s did not have. Had a lot of a "more metal" Van Halen to him.
His death probably inflates his status slightly, but not as much as others.

Back in the day, you may have had a case from a shred perspective. But now thanks to YouTube, there are videos and recordings of a teenage Yngwie in '79 or '80 and he was miles ahead of Randy. Guys like DiMeola and Holdsworth were around as well.

I don't know, but I recently installed a new AV receiver and, after tinkering with the settings, was ready to test it out.
I hit Crazy Train and cranked it up, thinking I'd listen to a sample and move on to something else, but its awesome force made me sit down and let it play all the way through at full tilt.

Give the Jake E Lee albums a go. He was just as technical and "shredirific" as Randy.

Is Randy Rhoads the greatest guitarist of all time?
But...he's up there. He was writing Dee at the same time he was writing the Suicide Solution (live) solo.

No

These are impossible questions.
I loved Rhoads and think he’s one of the best, but there are hundreds of guitarists with no discernible differences in their physical talents.
At that point it comes down to creativity, song writing, style, tone, etc, which is mostly personal preference.

Not to discount Randy Rhoads, I adore the first two albums, but IMHO he isn't even the greatest guitarist among all of Ozzy's guitarists.

Amazing player, and I prefer his Badlands work over Ozzy, but other than the Bark At The Moon solo (which is fantastic) I can’t honestly remember anything of his that stands out after all these years. Not saying that there isn’t one, but nothing resonates like Flying High Again, Mr. Crowley, Over The Mountain, SATO, etc. I can still hear in my head all those Randy solos.
