Is My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" the greatest album of the 90's?

Crank it to 11 on a quality stereo system on quality hallucinogens.

I like it but not the greatest

The opening "Only Shallow" to this day sends me into sensory overload. Fantastic.

Great record that is nowhere near the greatest.

I would say it can make a strong claim. It's hard for most people to separate "best" from "favorite". Best to me would be Nirvana - Nevermind despite the (inexplicably) pervasive contrarian attitude toward it these days. Favorite would be Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand.

Meh I think In Utero is a better album. A lot of people swear by GBV but nothing ever stands out when I listen to their music, sounds like generic 90's alt rock.

I understand that pearls and swine is always a factor.

Radiohead's "OK Computer" wins for that type of listening.

This is the correct answer.

I don’t believe any album stands out as the definite greatest of the 90s, but Loveless is fantastic and it’s one of the greats. I have never heard anything else quite like it.

The first time I put it on I remember thinking that there was something seriously wrong with my speakers or stereo.

Not even close, shouldn't even be sold in the same stores as other 90s albums.

What are some of the albums you would say dwarf it?

What is then?
No definitive answer...mine would have to be from one of the following:
Blood, Sugar, Sex Magic - RHCP
Nevermind - Nirvana
Ten - Pearl Jam
Wildflowers - Tom Petty

It’s up there but the greatest album of the 90s is Siamese Dream.

Top 3, but not the greatest.
