I would put Alanis Morissette (and many others) ahead of him. I've never owned any of her stuff, but the gal can write.

He is the king of lewd songs...just ahead of John Valby.

Even though I think that CS was brilliant in the 70's, I don't think that he ranks even in the Top 10 of best lyricists ever.

I have to admit that his songs are very melodic but nostalgic.

That’s a weird way to spell Bob Dylan.

I absolutely loathe Cat Stevens. I don't know why. You know how there's always those musicians or bands taht you just can't stand. Well....he's in my top 3. I.....I just cant' fricking deal with his stuff. I'm sure I'll get blasted but damn I think it's terrible.

Maybe you dislike his voice. He doesn't have a great voice honestly, but his guitar playing and melody are very good (even though some of his songs have a very outdated instrumentation).
Bob Dylan could be a great lyricist, but imo he's got a terrible voice. It's all a matter of taste I guess.

No sure about best lyricist, but the drunk one said “Cat Stevens was the greatest singer”.

James McMurtrey is a great lyricist, but not the best songwriter, since most of his lyrics are paired with songs with very similar sounding instrumentals
