Is it even Van Morrison's greatest album?

No. How can it be when Moondance was a better album?

Both are great but Moondance is a classic.

The greatest "album" of all time is probably Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Astral Weeks and Moondance are two very great but very different albums. For Astral Weeks he assembled a great jazz band and he gave them the bare bones of songs and had them improvise the rest; a very jazz album. Moondance he told the band of excellent musicians exactly what he wanted.

I think Moondance is generally considered his best album but you have a great point about how different the approach was hence the type of album each was make it difficult to compare.

Comparing things like music or really most art is almost impossible since personal preference will always be a factor in anyone's judgement.

I think most will agree tha Van Morrison was a gift to music, however.

You may be right, I am not that well versed in the general consensus on these matters. I based it on one write up I saw. I am probably conflating my own (and my friends) stronger familiarity with Moondance for the general consensus of those who rate these things.

Imagine my surprise when I decided to check Rolling Stone's top 500 albums and found both albums listed there with Astral Weeks being #19 and Moondance way down at #66.

I'm sure many would have a lot of disagreements with the list but

For comparison purposes, The Clash "London Calling" is #8 and "Dark Side of the Moon" is #43

It's really hard to comparatively quantify music.

Damn, London Calling is underrated on that list.

Not meant as a shot at DSotM in any way, just meant to say London Calling is amazing.

See, and for me I wouldn't put it that high. Just not as appealing to me. Individual taste is what makes rating these things so hard.
