How incredible is Nutshell by Alice in Chains?

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead
Layne put everything he had to offer into this song, few songs move me as much as this.

Love it.
Also, Angry Chair:
Loneliness is not a phase
Field of pain is where I graze
Serenity is far away
But “Dirt” has always stuck with me:
I want to taste dirty. A stinging pistol
In my mouth, on my tongue.
I want you to scrape me from the walls
And go crazy, like you made me

Nutshell is the song that drew me in to AIC. I love that song.
And yeah, Don't Follow is perfect. I'm glad I got to at least see Jerry play it live acoustic in 2007. Wish I could have seen them with Layne.

I can listen to AIC all day. Jar of Flies is a fantastic EP. You knew you were in for something special when Rotten Apple kicked it off. Totally set the tone for the whole thing.

Goddamn. The verses you listed from "Dirt" are incredibly morbid but undeniably genius. Frick.

Check out the band Magnolia Bayou on youtube.....they are up and coming and somewhat local. I think their new CD includes their version.....a pretty cool video for their rendition of Nutshell.

It's my favorite AIC song. It's strong, and it shows just how much Staley struggled in life.

It's great. The same can be said about Jar of Flies, as a whole. The same goes for Dirt.

Hard to believe this was live. One of the best vocal performances...ever.

The Unplugged version is the GOAT but I like the electric guitar solo and the drum outro on the early live versions.

No doubt. Was thinking/hoping that you'd picked out this performance before I clicked on the link. You didn't disappoint. It's not even one of my favorite songs by them but his vocals are amazing.

That shite sucks you in. Shame he and Chris are gone.

Don't forget Mike Starr, he was a real nice guy the two times I met him.

Yeah I wore that album out when it came out. The Sap EP was the one that got me really interested in them.

When I was teaching myself guitar back in 1994, once I got comfortable with chords, etc, Nutshell was the first full song I learned (solos included).
When I saw AIC live in NOLA a few years ago, Cantrell walked right in front of us to play the solo. I was on the third row so I got a great video of it. Caught several picks after the show too. Great night.

Thanks for this. Interesting take on one of my all time favorite tunes

I got a Cantrell pick from that show at the Saenger too. I was in the second row but over in the corner. Still a great seat. Also saw them do an acoustic show at the HOB in 2007. It was better than the MTV Unplugged show.
Something for Cantrell fans to check out here. GibsonTV on youtube has a new series called Icons and the latest episode features Jerry talking about his life and the band. Its a great watch. LINK
