It's not hard it just takes a lot of time... A lot of time sitting by yourself sounding like shite. Most adults don't have that kind of time so if you are one then don't bother.

OP I am you after 3 months. I went acoustic thinking it would be quieter. I was wrong. You can play an electric through amp and headphones so nobody hears you suck.
I bought an Alvarez acoustic. YouTube is tough. It is more for a guy with experience learning how to do specific things. Lessons need to be more structured. The beginning has to be a little boring. My problem with YouTube is that I do a couple lessons then get tempted to find "Led Zepplin Tabs" and then piss myself off. Basically any song you think is cool is going to be tough to play.

Buy a Fender Squire starter pack with the little amp. Take a few group lessons and learn the basics, then private lessons. I started in 7th grade and took private lessons until I left for college. There's always more to learn. Practice Practice Practice. Don't use tabs. Learn to figure out songs using just your ears. You'll recognize which shapes make which sounds and it becomes very rewarding to figure out your favorite songs by yourself

Would recommend upgrading the strings to some Elixers or D'Addarios, but hands down this baby rivals guitars that are 5x-10x its price. no. take a leisure class. That's how I got my start. Also, don't get a crappy acoustic to learn on. It will be painful to play. Get a fairly nice one (at least a few hundred dollars). If you don't like playing or give up, you can always sell it.

One way i'm learning is through rocksmith. Its a game or ps3 and xbox 360. I was getting decent but went on a 4 month hiatus so i'm back at square one.

It will take a few months with 1 or 2 hours everyday and all day Saturday . Get a chord book and learn the basic chords 1st, learn to change back and forth among all the 12 or so basic chords at 1st. In about the 4th month get someone to show you the Keys and the chords in each key and changing the chords within the keys. Then at about 6 months you can play most basic songs . I learned to play after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in the mid 6o's. Then I saw the Rolling Stones on Ed Sullivan and learned their songs by learning the keys/chords. I then learned Motown and all Top 40. Played in bands for 45 years until quitting 2 years ago at age 57. Loved it.

If you want to only learn tabs and some songs that you know, its easy.
If you want to learn how to improvise and sound good by yourself and with others it takes lots of time and practice. Like an hour a day everyday. Daily sessions will help much more than extended weekly sessions

agree, and I think pretty much anyone is capable of this

I know some that have been playing for a long time, and they are just decent. They can't get above that. Some people just have a lot more natural music talent. Same way that some people will be much more gifted with sports, math, etc.

This is truth. My gf has told me that pulling out my guitar and playing for her on the first date is one of the main reasons I was able to salvage it enough to get a second. I had never told her I knew how to play guitar (she knew I played trumpet because we met at a gig I was playing at the varsity). It was one of those comically disastrous first dates, but the guitar saved it. We're still dating over a year later.
