How difficult is it to learn how to play the guitar?

It bothers me that I do not know how to play a musical instrument. Can you get pretty decent on the guitar just by watching lessons on youtube?

it really depends if you're a good learner and have a lot of time
I learned when I was like 12 and would spend all my free time looking up tabs to my favorite songs.
If I hadn't learned at that time, I don't think I would have the time to learn now

Like all guys, I would like to be able to play because I've seen it get guys laid over and over, but there's no way I have the time and money to put into it. Plus I can't sing at all, so that kind of kills that.

Youtube lessons arent actually all that bad if you find the right ones.
And it depends on how good you want to get. Learning the basic chords is pretty easy and good enough to play some songs and such. I taught myself using random websites and videos online in a few months. Getting to that next step is tough though

Would you reccomend any cheap guitar starting out? I don't mind dropping big bucks on one once I learn how to play but i don't want to make that investment yet.

It's not difficult to learn. Depends to some extent on what you want to play. I picked up a guitar 6 years ago, got a chord sheet, pulled some songs I liked off the Internet, practiced 2 hours a day, and could play maybe 10 songs halfway decently within 6 weeks.

Sort of depends on what you want to play—I mean if you want to play metal or something, maybe you pass on an acoustic guitar. All things being equal I'd start on an acoustic; it'll make you a better player in the long run. You can find a decent low-end acoustic for $300-$400. Maybe get an acoustic-electric and a little amp just as a motivator.
Playing guitar rules; I got addicted the moment I started learning. And it just gets better when you start writing your own shite.

i know 5-6 chords and then you can look up tablature online, my brother and law taught me though the basics. sign up for a couple lessons. mainly you just need to know how to read the tabs and chords and how to tune and that kind of stuff then you'll figure everything else out.

my playing guitar prob didn't directly get my laid, but it's def something that can make you seem more desirable to chicks.
The best is when you're with a mixed group of people, say 6 or 7, and there is a guiar lying around and you're the ONLY one in the group who can play

IMO the best way to go would to be buy a decent guitar. Doesn't have to be the best. My first was a PRS, they cost around 700. Then as far as learning I would find tabs of songs I like online and sometimes use youtube. Just got to practice it over and over until you get it. Goodluck

:) I've been playing 25 years and I'm still improving.
There is no "learned guitar". It's just a matter of how good you get. Buy a cheap used beater, and see if you're still playing in 3 months. If so, you're well on your way to becoming a guitarist.

if you have a mac, garage band offers a bunch of free tutorials in an awesome easy to follow layout. You can also buy more once you start to advance.

you need occasional feedback from a teacher/expert.
more often at the beginning.
2,500 hours and coaching = pro
practice at least an hour a day EVERY SINGLE day, and two hours two days a week. You will make progress. at least two lessons a month for a few months. after a year you can manage with a lesson every month or two.
if you dont play every day it will take a lot longer.
your hands will adapt. or not, depending on whether you take days off.
start with nylon/gut, not steel strings. your fingers will need to adapt.

yeah just get you a cheap acoustic and learn how to play basic chords. muscle memory will develop which is pretty cool. if you get an electric, don't be a douche and just play through distortion.

It's not all that hard to learn the basics. Getting down some basic chords doesn't take long at all but it is pretty challenging for a beginner. Even beyond that, you have to work on timing and rhythm as well. All this takes a couple of months easily on average.
However, I've seen some people that couldn't even get beyond that stage. It all comes down to your dedication to learn the instrument. I've seen many a guitar rendered useless because its owner just was not committed to the instrument. Sad really.
Now, if you want to become a BA guitarist, that is a continuous learning process. I've been playing since the year 2000 and I'm always learning new stuff. It took me years to learn how to play lead to my satisfaction. Learning scales, working on improvisation, it goes on and on and on. And even then, I always find someone to feel inferior to.
