Expanding my horizons and listening to some queen.

The boys of summer by don henley has to be considered a very similar melody.

has anyone else noticed this?

The obvious reason is because Boys of Summer came before Breakthru, by ~ 5 years...

plus they aren't the same song at all... are there some similarities in the chorus, sure... but c'mon...

Boys of Summer was a Mike Cambell (TP / Heartbreakers) rif that he gave Henley because Petty didn't want it.

There are only 12 notes in music, and a finite number of ways they can be arranged into a melody. It would be impossible to find any melody in modern music that does not already exist in classical scores. Since the Eagles are part of the discussion, the main part of the Hotel California melody can be found in Bach's "fur elise"

The more you know. I always thought it sounded like it could have been a Petty track in the vein of "American Girl"

Why didn't Warren Zevon sue Kid Rock?

Because Zevon took Werewolves from Sweet Home Alabama.

That's easy, the melody of Hotel California is almost identical to Rolling Stones' "Angie", and Jethro Tull's "We used to know".
